Gloucester vs Leicester Guinness Premiership Semi Final HighlightsGloucester vs Leicester Guinness Premiership Semi Final Highlights

first_imgMonday May 19, 2008 Gloucester vs Leicester Guinness Premiership Semi Final Highlights Gloucester suffered a soul destroying defeat at the hands of a 78th minute Andy Goode drop-goal that saw the Leicester Tigers into the Guinness Premiership final, where they will meet old rivals London Wasps.Champions Leicester, who were four minutes away from missing out on the playoffs before their last-gasp win over Harlequins in their final league game, triumphed 26-25 in a closely fought classic encounter at Kingsholm. With five minutes to go the hosts worked a position for Walker to nudge them back into a two-point lead and send the Gloucester hordes at a packed Kingsholm delirious, but Leicester were not going to be denied an historic victory.drop-goals aside, two bits of play by Pacific Islanders stood out for their sheer brilliance. First was from Fijian Akapusi Qera’s brilliant part in the James Simpson-Daniel try. And the second was the sensational try by big Samoan Alesana Tuilagi who bulldozed his way through numerous defenders. In the end, it was heartbreak for Gloucester, who had led the table almost all season but, for the third time, earned nothing for ending the regular campaign top.Leicester vs Wasps in the final then, and if these two semis are anything to go buy, we have a classic game in prospect. Some of the countries taking part in the tournament, to be held from 14 January to 5 February, are ruled by leading press freedom predators and have distinguished themselves by the skill with which they abuse journalists and media outlets. They include the host nation, Gabon, which imposed a complete blackout on the media, communications and social networks during the crisis that followed last August’s presidential election. Uganda has been working on its technique all year, roughing up journalists during demonstrations by opponents of President Yoweri Museveni’s election. The Democratic Republic of Congo has the deadliest record, with 12 journalists murdered with impunity in the past ten years, while Egypt is one of the world’s biggest prisons for journalists, with 28 currently detained, and is in the process of tightening the net of its media legislation even more. “The public’s enthusiasm for such events must not make us forget another reality, the much grimmer one of abuses against journalists and media outlets by many of the participating countries,” RSF secretary-general Christophe Deloire said. “So we are using the AFCON to issue red cards to certain African countries and leaders who are press freedom predators.” The tournament kicks off on 14 January with a game between Gabon, which is ranked 100th out of 180 countries in RSF’s 2016 World Press Freedom Index, and Guinea-Bissau, ranked 79th. Spatial dynamics of two introduced species of carabid beetles on the sub-Antarctic island of South GeorgiaSpatial dynamics of two introduced species of carabid beetles on the sub-Antarctic island of South Georgia

first_imgOn the sub-Antarctic island of South Georgia two species of predatory beetle, Trechisibus antarcticus and Oopterus soledadinus (Coleoptera, Carabidae), were accidentally introduced. The colonisation process offers unique opportunities for testing ecological hypotheses in the field. As a basis for such studies, the spatial dynamics of the two species in the coastal lowland around Stromness Bay and Cumberland Bay were monitored during the period 1988–1996. Data are presented on the expansion of the two species and on the thermal characteristics of the tussock-forming grass Parodiochloa flabellata, which dominates the coastal lowlands. The largest expansion was shown by T. antarcticus, occurring as two populations in the Stromness Bay area. The origin of one of the populations, discovered in 1982, is Husvik Harbour, from where the species has colonised the central part of Stromness Bay. The second population, discovered in 1988 at Harbour Point, is invading the northern part of the area around Stromness Bay. Up to the present, three populations of O. soledadinus have been discovered. One population was found in 1988 at Husvik Harbour, co-existing with T. antarcticus, from where it is slowly expanding its distribution into the coastal zone. A second, very small, population of O. soledadinus was found in 1996 at Jason Harbour (Cumberland West Bay). The largest population of O. soledadinus, first reported in 1963, inhabits the area around Grytviken and King Edward Point (Cumberland East Bay), where it is the sole carabid species. The tussock grass vegetation offers a highly stable thermal environment compared with the more variable surroundings. Together with an ample food supply in the form of small arthropods and beetle larvae, and a vacant niche for arthropod predators, the benign microclimate of the tussock vegetation may explain the success of these predator introductions. Results of field observations on population parameters of the carabids, and laboratory measurement of egg production indicate the potential for large-scale co-existence.last_img read more
