Brush with death on Mt. Baldy Rd.Brush with death on Mt. Baldy Rd.

first_imgThe Civic bumped Murad’s 2000 Chevy Malibu and over the side he went, plummeting more than 100 feet before the car hit a tree and stopped. “I was thinking, `What’s happening to me? What’s happening to me?”‘ he said. “I thought it was a dream. I couldn’t believe it.” The car came to rest with the passenger side door pinned against the tree. “I took off the seat belt and started feeling myself to make sure I was OK,” he said. To his shock, there was no blood, no obvious broken bones. Just pain in his back and neck and a scrape on his knee. COLTON – It was supposed to be a quiet drive on his day off, a leisurely Monday afternoon trip up the mountain for lunch and a little sunshine. Then Murad Tawfiq Murad of La Verne saw a Corvette and a Honda Civic racing down Mount Baldy Road. The Civic was in his lane, headed straight for him. “I tried to avoid the one car but I couldn’t,” the Jordanian-born Murad said Tuesday through a translator. On Tuesday afternoon, the 46-year-old was in Arrowhead Regional Medical Center with two broken ribs, some internal bleeding and a hernia that would require surgery later in the day. He knows he is a very lucky man. But he wonders what kind of person forces someone off the road and drives away. Sister-in-law May Murad says Murad waited in his car for about 15 minutes for the help he was sure would arrive. “He thought they were going to stop,” she said. “He waited for them to come and waited and waited and waited. Then he got out.” It took him a good 30 minutes to crawl up the hillside, where he was sitting when paramedics, who were alerted by a passerby who saw the accident, arrived. “Very slow,” he said. California Highway Patrol spokesman Edmund Zorrilla said officers are looking for a blue Honda Civic and a white Corvette. The drivers face misdemeanor hit-and-run charges. Zorrilla says they need to be taken off the streets. “They didn’t care,” he said. “They just continued on.” May Murad says the family is angry. She says Murad is a hardworking man who has been preparing dough on the overnight shift at Krispy Kreme in Ontario Mills for seven years. She wants the drivers caught and punished. “They just kept on going,” she said. “It’s amazing. How did they sleep last night knowing a person probably died?” Anyone with information on the accident is asked to call the Baldwin Park CHP office at (626) 338-1164.
