Donegal County Council has revealed that a huge increase in the percentage of dogs being re-homed from its Dog Shelter has jumped significantly from 43% in 2011 to 76% in 2014.County Vet, Charles Kealey stated that in 2014, 632 dogs passed through the Donegal County Council Dog Shelter. Of these 383 were seized by the Wardens and 249 were handed over. 45 were reclaimed by their owners, 9 were re-homed directly by the Shelter and 427 were transferred to Dog welfare groups (animal charities) and 150 were put to sleep.“We are delighted with the increase in the number of dogs rehomed and this is testament to the great work done by the staff in the Dog Shelter as well as the co-operation that we have received from local and national dog welfare organisations” he said.Dogs enter the Dog Shelter either because they have been handed over by a member of the public who can no longer keep them or because the Dog Warden has seized them following complaints made by members of the public. “People may no longer be able to keep their dog for a number of reasons such as old age, illness, moving home etc.“Responsible dog owners will leave their dog into the shelter if they cannot find a suitable home for it.“This prevents the dog from becoming a nuisance and also means the dog will not be exposed to the welfare problems associated with straying.“Stray dogs are liable to encounter a number of welfare problems including malnutrition, disease, injury through traffic accidents and fighting or abusive treatment”.“Dogs are seized when members of the public make complaints about dogs causing a nuisance.“Such complaints include straying, biting, fouling, aggressive behaviour sheep worrying etc. On these occasions the dog warden visits the area in question and removes any stray dogs,” said Mr Kealey. All dogs must have a dog licence. Donegal County Council issued 7,931 dog licences in 2014. Individual dog licences last for one year from the date of issue and cost €20.00.Dog licences can be purchased at any post office or online at donegalcoco.ie.Dog owners can buy a ‘Lifetime of Dog’ licence. This is valid for the dog’s lifetime and costs €140. A “General Dog Licence” (which costs €400) is a licence allowing a person to keep an unspecified number of dogs at one designated premises and is valid for one year from the date of issue. The dog shelter is situated at Glencar, Letterkenny and is open Monday to Saturday inclusive from 10.30 am until 1.30 pm. The Dog Wardens can be contacted on (074) 9125159.COUNCIL REVEAL HUGE INCREASE IN DOGS BEING RE-HOMED IN DONEGAL was last modified: May 29th, 2015 by Mark ForkerShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)Tags:Featuresnews
DD Motoring: Letterkenny to Tory Island in 22 hours!DD Motoring: Letterkenny to Tory Island in 22 hours!
Two Chinese tourists apologised for being lost in Letterkenny recently at Boyce’s corner. With more English than I had Chinese and the help of their phone, they tried to explain that they were trying to find the bus station.Simple I thought, as I pointed across the roundabout to the Bus Eireann station, sitting right behind them. Advertisement Then one of the two of them started waving their hands in protest: “No, no, no, bus Johnnie McGinley!”Then I pointed past a line of taxis to a single bus shelter along the side of the road, “JOHN… McGinley,” I suggested. They both smiled in agreement, but with a tinge of uncertainty.Byways of trying to reassure them that a bus would arrive at this lone bus stop, I asked them where were they heading to. Advertisement They searched on their phone and showed me Tory Island on a map.I was going to tell them that John McGinley could probably see Tory Island out the sitting room window of his own home in Magheroarty, near Gortahork, but thought that would confuse these tourists completely. After we departed their company, I thought on their journey from their home in China and how someone could come from the other side of the world, maybe by train, then by plane, and then bus to get as far as Letterkenny. So, in an effort to try and visualise their onward journey from Letterkenny to Tory Island, I decided to do what they had done and Googled their journey from Letterkenny to Tory Island. My first attempt returned a journey time of 19 hours and 19 minutes! That’s what Google figured it would take me to travel the last leg of the Chinese tourists’ journey in Donegal, which included four different transport services operators. They included the Letterkenny Town bus to get me as far as Mr Chippys, then advised me to take the John McGinley bus to Lough Altan Hotel in Gortahork before travelling on the Local Link Donegal to get me as far as Magheroarty. From there, Google told me to get aboard a Donegal Coastal Cruises ship for the final leg of the journey to Tory Island. In contrast to this, I Googled how long it would take for me to go from Letterkenny to Dublin and it came up with four hours and the only service provider for this journey was Bus Eireann, no mention of John McGinley bus, which could have taken these tourist straight to Gortahork and only a few miles up the road was Magheroarty where they could have got a ferry across to Tory. At 19 hrs and 19 minutes to complete the journey by bus, I decided to check the flight time was Ireland to China and found that could be achieved in as little as 12hrs and 36 minutes. The map by google from Letterkenny to Tory Island 22hrs and 24 minutes. Photo Brian McDaid.I know that the journey from Letterkenny to Magheroarty Pier will take you approximately one hour in your car and is just short of 30 miles in distance going over Muckish and even if you went around by Cresslough and Dunfanaghy it would only add less than half an hour to your journey and an extra 10 miles in distanceSo my question is this: Why does Google only know the likes of John McGinley is available for only part of the journey to Donegal? But is unaware of their existence in the part that Bus Eireann is operating in? Once Bus Eireann go to the furthest point in the North West of Ireland, Letterkenny, the service terminates the Galway express, terminate the service in Derry, and private bus services that transport the most passengers out and in of Donegal all year round is not recognised outside its county by an information giant like Google.Everyone knows that it would never take 22 hours to get from Letterkenny to Tory Island, no matter who was driving the bus, and at different times of the day and even longer journey via Dungloe to Tory Island can be achieved by Local Bus Donegal in under 12 hrs.But in my opinion, those times are still sending out the wrong messages for anyone that is thinking of visiting our county and it will surely put them off.On the run-up to the recent local election, calls were made by councillors for a proper bus hub to be created in Letterkenny to cater for all the buses from all the private operators that make their stop at Mr. Chippys in Letterkenny.A better option could be an online transport hub dedicated for Donegal to included all the bus services public and private sectors included would be of more benefit to both the tourists that are making the effort to come as far as Donegal. And it would also help the tourism industry in Donegal, which in my opinion is suffering badly these last few years. The chartered tours may well take a lot of this bother out of a holiday, but God knows how many other tourists are giving up as soon as they Google Donegal, which looks as if it has no transport service at all.But if all the operators were included in the one online transport hub made just for Donegal, it would surely improve our fading tourist trade.Happy Motoring folks.DD Motoring: Letterkenny to Tory Island in 22 hours! was last modified: July 11th, 2019 by Brian McDaidShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)
9 November 2004Retief Goosen’s nickname is The Goose. Maybe it should be The Golden Goose. In the season-ending US PGA Tour Championship, featuring an elite 31-man field, Goosen proved once more that he’s the poster boy for the saying: “When the going gets tough, the tough get going”.The South African star brings to mind images of Clint Eastwood in his Spaghetti Western days: the quiet manner and the slit eyes, as if he were always looking into the sun. But even the Man With No Name would find it difficult to overcome The Goose in a duel.Outshooting the TigerNo one, it seems, relishes the toughest challenges that golf poses more than Goosen. His two US Open titles are evidence of that. Now he’s provided additional ammunition for that argument, outduelling Tiger Woods in the final round of the Tour Championship to lift the title on a testing East Lake layout. To put this feat into perspective, it is only the third time out of 33 that Woods has failed to win after having at least a share of the third round lead.“Goose is one steady player . You don’t win two US Opens by being very erratic. You have to be steady, and he’s done that”, Woods commented aterwards.Goosen started four shots behind Woods, but fired the only bogey-free final round as he posted a six-under-par 64 to take victory by four shots. His round matched the lowest final round in any of the four Tour Championships that East Lake had previously hosted.Hanging around under the radarAccording to the South African, he “likes to hang around under the radar”. That he manages to do that is possibly a bigger feat than any other that he has achieved yet. One has to ask, how is it that Goosen’s name seldom comes up as a likely challenger in the big events, even after two major victories? This is a man who has proved he is as tough as teak; remember that he won 10 matches in succession in the Dunhill Cup. When the chips are down, one man you wouldn’t want to face is Retief Goosen. After his win, it was pointed out to Goosen that he had won five times on the US PGA Tour since he started playing it regularly, about four or five years ago. The question was then posed whether he thought that was about the right number of wins, or should he have had more by now.‘I know which ones to pick’His answer was interesting: “I don’t know. I’ve won good ones, and I probably had my chances to win a couple more, and I probably think I should win a bit more. But I’m getting more and more comfortable out there now, getting to know the golf courses, as well, that we play.“I know which ones to pick and know the ones I like. I can work my schedule out that way so I’ll give myself more chances.”That’s not good news for Goosen’s rivals. His win in Tour Championship lifted him one place in the world rankings to a career-high fourth place. Tiger Woods’ second-place finish was enough to lift him to number two in the world, with Ernie Els moving down to number three, fractionally behind the American.Goosen’s victory also boosted his bank balance by US$1 080 000 (R6.74-million) – a huge prize that is testament to the status of the Tour Championship. It was The Goose’s second win on the US PGA Tour of 2004. He previously won the US Open, which made him, along with Tiger Woods, one of only two players to win a US PGA Tour title for four years running. In Europe he also laid claim to the European Open title.Great year in the US and EuropeDespite campaigning extensively on both the US PGA and European Tours, Goosen recorded very high finishes on both money lists. In the US he finished in sixth spot, while in Europe he ended as runner-up to Ernie Els.Two other South Africans contested the Tour Championship. Ernie Els and Rory Sabbatini both finished nine shots off the pace on two-under-par 278, good enough for a share of tenth place. In the top 100 of the latest world rankings, it is Ernie Els in third, Retief Goosen in fourth, Rory Sabbatini in thirty-first, Trevor Immelman in fiftieth, and Tim Clark in sixty-ninth place. South African-born Nick Price (Durban) occupies forty-fourth place, and Justin Rose (Johannesburg) is ranked sixty-seventh. Funding available for farmers through Lake Erie Conservation Reserve Enhancement ProgramFunding available for farmers through Lake Erie Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program
Share Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest The Ohio Department of Agriculture’s (ODA) Division of Soil and Water Conservation is making farmers aware of funding available to farmers through the Lake Erie Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program (CREP).CREP is the country’s largest private-land conservation program. Administered by the USDA Farm Service Agency in partnership with the ODA and local soil and water conservation districts, CREP targets high-priority conservation concerns in exchange for removing environmentally sensitive land from production. In return for establishing permanent resource-conserving plant species, farmers are paid an annual rental rate along with other federal and state incentives as applicable per each CREP agreement. Participation is voluntary, and the contract period is typically 15 years.“Farmers are continually looking for innovative ways to practice conservation on their farms,” said Dorothy Pelanda, Director of the Ohio Department of Agriculture. “This program provides great opportunities to make positive contributions to our state’s water quality while allowing farms to remain productive.”New for 2019 is the $200 bonus offered by the state of Ohio for all newly-enrolled filter strip and riparian area practices. For current CREP participants with expiring contracts, re-enrolling and expanding the width of filter strips or riparian areas will earn you the bonus dollars on those new added acres all the while expanding the environmental protection of these practices. The Lake Erie CREP is available in 27 Ohio counties including; Allen, Ashland, Auglaize, Crawford, Defiance, Erie, Fulton, Hancock, Hardin, Henry, Huron, Lucas, Lorain, Marion, Medina, Mercer, Ottawa, Paulding, Putnam, Richland, Sandusky, Seneca, Shelby, Van Wert, Williams, Wood and Wyandot counties. For more information and to sign up visit your local soil and water conservation district or contact the ODA Division of Soil and Water Conservation at [email protected] or 614-265-6610.
Here’s What A 3D-Printed Record Sounds Like [Video]Here’s What A 3D-Printed Record Sounds Like [Video]
12 Unique Gifts for the Hard-to-Shop-for People… That’s because even at the highest resolutions available in 3D printing, you can print audio grooves only fine enough to capture a fraction of the resolution and sampling rate of a even decent-sounding MP3. There’s also a very tiny grain and residue on 3D printed objects that interferes with the turntable stylus’ ability to pick up a clean audio signal. Still, the songs are clearly recognizable, making what Ghassaei has pulled off from a technical standpoint very impressive. Don’t Get Too Excited, HipstersJust be careful about envisioning a not-too-distant future in which we can all print out our favorite albums on vinyl-like material and listen to them in high-fidelity stereo. Music-industry executives jazzed about the recent resurgence in vinyl record sales should also take a chill pill. For one thing, this method of creating records is pretty expensive. Between printer usage time and the raw materials needed to print a 12-inch disc, it probably costs several hundred dollars per record. For the price tag of two or three 3D-printed records, you could press 100 real vinyl albums. Resolution is the biggest stumbling block. Although the cost of 3D printing has been dropping into more consumer-accessible territory, the resolution of the printers hasn’t changed much in the last few years. The types of things people use 3D printers today for just don’t demand the super-high resolution required to print tiny, clean grooves like the ones created by pressing an aluminum master disc into hot vinyl – the old-fashioned way to make a record. Ghassaei might be able to get that Daft Punk song to sound clearer on 3D-printed records than it does right now, but it’s not going to be a viable, listenable alternative anytime soon. Who knows, though? Maybe in a few years we’ll see lo-fi experimental noise bands in Brooklyn selling limited edition, 3D-printed LPs. They won’t come cheap, though. john paul titlow 5 Outdoor Activities for Beating Office Burnout Tags:#3d printing#music 9 Books That Make Perfect Gifts for Industry Ex… 4 Keys to a Kid-Safe App If you ever wanted to print out your favorite albums at home, that weird little itch of yours may soon be scratched. Amanda Ghassaei, an editor at Instructables and DIY audio hardware geek, recently succeeded in 3D printing 12-inch records containing music by artists like Nirvana, The Pixies and Daft Punk. It sounds terrible, but the achievement is still pretty impressive. Ghassaei used Processing to write a program that translates digital audio into 3D models, which can then be printed on a plastic material using a high-resolution 3D printer. The end result can be played on any turntable, although as you can hear in the video below, it doesn’t sound very good. Related Posts
Video Editing Quick Tip: File & Folder OrganizationVideo Editing Quick Tip: File & Folder Organization
Create a main folder for every new project and then dump this folder structure into it. This simple list covers the broad file types that will be associated with most video editing projects (don’t forget the Documents folder, an important inclusion). The numerical prefixes help to keep the folders in order.Ultimately, the best folder structure is the one that works best for you. Once you find one that works for your needs, BE CONSISTENT.It’s easy to get lazy with file organization when you’re in a video editing session and under pressure – saving files to your Desktop with obscure file names. If you work this way, which is of course inadvisable, ALWAYS clean off your Desktop and Downloads folder at the end of the session day. Move the files into their appropriate organized folder and then go back and relink them in your video editing app. You’ll end up thanking yourself that you took the time.We want to know, what file and folder structure do you use for your video editing work? What tips can you share for being a more organized video editor? Please share in the comments below! 00_Projects01_MEDIA02_AUDIO03_GFX04_SFX05_MUSIC06_OUTPUTS07_DOCS Keep your sanity and work more efficiently. Use a dedicated file and folder organization system in your video editing.I recently stumbled across a Reddit post asking for help in ‘keeping files organized while editing’. It’s an important request.Organization is a common pain point among video editors. Maybe its that most editors are creative right-brained leaning types, and they inherently have trouble keeping their files efficiently organized. Add to that the fact that Editors are usually working under intense time constraints. It’s easy to get files misplaced, especially when media surfaces at different stages of the editing process.Good media management, file structure, versioning and a dedicated organization system is imperative to editing successfully. Files that are saved to the wrong location can go missing, costing you time trying to pinpoint them…or worse, they get deleted. For tips on file naming check out my previous post: File Naming for Video Editors, Designers and Photographers. In this post, we’re going to look at creating a video editing folder structure – having set places to store your files. Let’s jump in…Getting back to the Reddit post…some good suggestions were shared for folder naming and organzation and I wanted to share them here. One user suggested Post Haste, an application created by Digital Rebellion that we’ve mentioned on the blog before. Post Haste automates the process of setting up folders on your computer for different workflows (photography, video editing, design, etc). Run Post Haste at the start of a project and you’ll have all the folders you need for the project’s duration. It’s a free media management tool, so its definitely worth downloading it and testing it out in your workflow.Other Reddit users shared their own folder structures:Footage (with subfolders for specific shoot dates if necessary)Edits (put the timelines there)GraphicsAudioImagesThis particular structure is pretty standard for editing, but I’d imagine it’s best used to organize your media within your video editing application, not on your media drive. If you set this up at the start of every project it’ll be easier to organize your media as you bring it into the app through post production. If you’re looking for a folder structure for your hard drive, I liked this one:
I recently had a client describe me as non-slimy. Those were the words he used to describe our interaction. For this to mean anything worth exploring, you would have to believe that there is a way to be slimy in sales. Naturally, I asked for clarification.Give Up Straight PitchingThe client’s version of slimy comes from his experience with salespeople that immediately started pitching him on why he should choose them over their competitors. His experience with the groups he met with began with a little small talk, followed by a slide deck and a conversation about what made their company great. You can very easily imagine the contents of the first eight slides in their decks, and you might have been able to swap out the logos and have the salesperson work from a competitor’s deck with nothing lost. What can make one appear slimy is the way they view the outcome of their effort; in this case, it is “making the sale.” An approach in which your clear intention is “making the sale” is self-oriented because you are trying to get what you want—not help your prospect get what they want or need, something that would make you other-oriented.Focus on Ideas and OutcomesThere is a difference between salespeople and companies that pitch themselves and their services and salespeople who focus on ideas and outcomes. The first group believes they are selling their solution and their company by directly addressing these things with their prospective clients. The second group focuses on ideas and outcomes, and in doing so creates a preference to work with them by giving the prospect the experience of learning how they think, what they believe is important, and what it is going to be like to work with them.In the popular vernacular, you might call this insight. You might also call it business acumen, situational knowledge, and intellectual curiosity. To be a consultative salesperson, you must possess these things to provide counsel. When we salespeople are at our best, we are deeply interested in other people, their business, and their challenges. We also focus on exploring how we might improve their circumstances and their results. Instead of telling the prospective clients why they should choose us, we prove it through our words and actions, a path that appears to the slimy salesperson as being too indirect to be valid—or worthy of emulating.Pursue Persistent PatienceAnother factor that one could easily perceive as “slimy” is the speed at which the sales conversations (plural, and especially plural in the case of most complex, B2B sales).Speeding through the process in an attempt to get the final “ask” creates a negative emotional feeling in your prospect. Skipping important conversations creates greater concern for your prospect, as it feels like you are driving them to a conclusion without their consent. It feels like “being sold,” something a bad salesperson once tried when selling to me.A non-slimy approach is one of persistent patience. The persistence necessary is because of the tendency to skip to the end when you already know what the right answer is, how it will help your prospect, and what they need to do to get started. The patient part is to follow a process that provides your dream client with a preference to work with you and the confidence to move forward. In The Lost Art of Closing: Winning the 10 Commitments That Drive Sales, I outlined a non-linear process for helping a prospect to move from their current state to a better future state. Those commitments include Time, Explore, Change, Collaborate, Build Consensus, Invest, Review Solutions, Resolve Concerns, Decide (what you know as “closing”), and Execute. Even though my experience caused me to write this book from a B2B perspective, it has been useful for B2C, as the categories of commitments tend to occur in sales generally, even if they go faster in B2C.These commitments about individual decisions your dream client needs to make can take time, and guiding them through the conversation tends to speed things up, where trying to avoid them to get the ninth commitments slows things down—if it doesn’t kill the deal altogether. In sales, fast is slow, and slow is fast, a truth you will find extends to human relationships in all their many varieties. It takes both persistence and patience to sell the client on the process, and it’s that persistent patience that positions you as the right person, and by extension, your company, to choose as a partner. A non-slimy approach is one in which you serve your dream client by helping them make the changes they need to make by guiding them through a process that takes into account their needs—even when they don’t know precisely what is necessary.Non-SlimyI have asked college students to describe the attributes that define a salesperson. They generally reply with words like pushy, smarmy, slimy, greedy, selfish, and aggressive, even though they have had very few interactions with salespeople, with their only significant purchase being a used car. The reason the connotation is so persistent is that a few bad actors leave such an awful impression. It is difficult to become a great salesperson. It takes time, effort, and a real desire to learn and improve at your chosen craft. However, that is a more accessible, faster, and more certain success plan than trying any short cut that might make your prospect perceive you as slimy.
