If your smartphone is packing one of NVIDIA‘s powerful, dual-core Tegra 2 systems-on-a-chip, it just got a little bit easier to find software that will really show off your Android device’s power: they’ve just released the new Tegra Zone app for Tegra 2 based smartphones and tablets to the Android market, and it presents a nice showcase of games and software optimized for the SoC.Don’t think of this as another Marketplace. While Android already has too many places to get apps, the Tegra Zone is really just an attractive promotional app. If you’ve got a Tegra 2 enabled device — a genus which encompasses the Motorola Xoom, LG G-Slate, Motorola ATRIX 4G and other devices — downloading the Tegra Zone app will allow you to browse comprehensive reviews and previews of games like Dungeon Defenders: FW Deluxe, Samurai II: Vengeance THD, Backbreaker THD, Fruit Ninja THD, and Hardwood Solitaire IV, along with teasers of upcoming titles such as Galaxy on Fire and Hardwood Spades.Tegra Zone fully integrates with the Android Market, keeping the matter of downloading and updating your Tegra-enabled apps easier than if it was a competing marketplace unto itself. What NVIDIA’s banking on here is that their own showcase app will really underline the benefits of owning a Tegra-equipped Android phone. They’re hoping that a Tegra sticker on the side of an Android box will one day be just as much of a deciding factor in informing a consumer’s decision as an NVIDIA sticker is on the side of a desktop or a laptop. I’m not sure how likely that is — frankly, only the most silicon-obsessed of nerds care about their graphic cards, let alone their smartphone’s invisible SoC — but it’s a nice thought.
