Escape from lock-ups… result of “poor supervision” – Crime ChiefRanks of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) are currently on the hunt for two of three suspects, who broke out of an East Bank Demerara (EBD) Police Station on Tuesday afternoon.Twenty-five-year-old murder accused Wayne Gilbert of Lot 30 West La Penitence, Georgetown, was handed over to the Police at the Brickdam Station just before midnight on Tuesday by his father. He was scheduled to be arraigned before a city magistrate on Wednesday for theEscapee Wayne Gilbertmurder of Rawle Rodrigues, on January 20 at the Stabroek Square. The other two escapees: armed robbery suspect Ivre Hooper, 25, of James Street, Albouystown, Georgetown, and Derrol James, 22, of Lot 131 Middle Walk, Buxton, East Coast Demerara, who was arrested on a simple larceny charge, are still on the run.According to acting Crime Chief Paul Williams, efforts are afoot to recapture the duo, who are of significant interest to the Police.“We are checking … we have some information about where the second person is likely to be, so we are making checks,” he posited.Police reports revealed that ranks at the Grove Police Station, located on the East Bank of Demerara, had taken a group of 13 inmates out from the lock-ups to thEscapee Derrol Jamese holding area for them to freshen up.It was during this exercise that the three suspects made good their escape via an opening on the western wall. A piece of metal, believed to have been broken off from the lock-ups door and used to break the wall, was subsequently found by the Police.Williams believes that there should have been more ranks present at the stationwhen such exercises are being carried out.“The escape would have occurred because of poor supervision; there should have been more ranks present. At the time of bringing those persons into a certain area, there should have been more ranks present around there and because of that, it gave (the suspects) the opportunity to do what they did to make good their escapes,” theGrove Police Station from which the three inmates escaped on Tuesday afternoonacting Crime Chief asserted.According to Williams, several ranks attached to the station were out on patrol duty when the incident occurred. As a result of the breakout, the supervisor who was in charge of the shift during which the incident occurred has been placed under close arrest as investigations are ongoing. The acting Crime Chief had also stated that more ranks were also expected to be hauled in for questioning. The Police Force is asking anyone with information that would lead to the rearrests of Gilbert and James to make contact with the nearest Police Station or any of the Force’s emergency/hotline numbers.
Harry Kane targets Arsenal after ‘confident’ Tottenham extend unbeaten runHarry Kane targets Arsenal after ‘confident’ Tottenham extend unbeaten run
Tottenham striker Harry Kane 1 Tottenham striker Harry Kane is adamant Spurs’ growing confidence can inspire them to victory in Sunday’s North London derby at Arsenal.Mauricio Pochettino’s side are undefeated in the Premier League since the opening day of the season [a 1-0 defeat to Manchester United] and extended their unbeaten run to ten games with a 3-1 win over Aston Villa on Monday.Arsenal have already beaten Spurs once this season, the Gunners dumping them out of the League Cup in September. But Kane – who found the net against Villa at White Hart Lane – believes Tottenham are now well placed to stun their rivals thanks to their recent form, plus a number of key absentees for Arsene Wenger.“We’re playing very well, we’re exciting, we’re a young team and we’ve got a lot of energy, and the wins will just keep giving us that, but there’s still a long way to go so we’ve got to keep trying to learn and improve,” the England striker said.“Anderlecht [in the Europa League on Thursday] is important for us so we’ve got to stay focused on that for now, but of course, everyone’s excited for the North London derby. It’s a game everyone looks forward to, both teams are playing well so it’ll be good to go and try and get a result.“We made a good statement against Man City [in a recent 4-1 victory] and followed that up pretty well with wins so we face Arsenal on Sunday going for the win, and we’re full of confidence and know we can win.“The aim is the top four but there’s still a long way to go. We’ve got to stay consistent throughout the whole season, we can’t just have a good start and fade away.”Tottenham’s second goalscorer on Monday evening – in front of Roy Hodgson – was the talented Dele Alli, 19, who is expected to be included in the next England squad for their upcoming friendly fixtures with France and Spain. His swift rise from a Football League player to international recognition is not dissimilar to Kane’s during the past season, and for all that such pressure can be difficult for a young player to handle, the forward believes that his young team-mate has the character to cope.“He’s a great player and a great lad as well,” Kane said. “He’s very focused, he’s good to have around the dressing room, he’s a bubbly character. We’re delighted for him, he’s come in this season and settled in straight away.“He’s still young, he’s still got a lot to learn, a long way to go. And yes, I was probably in that position last year so it’s great for him to have me and other players who have been through that to talk to. He’s a mature lad and I’m sure he’ll take it in his stride.“We have discussions now and then, he watched last season and he wants to go and do the same. He’s a young player with a lot of talent and he just wants to play football, and that’s what’s nice to see.“He’s been playing very well for us, he came in the last [England] squad and did very well in training and impressed, so he’s got to keep doing what he’s doing. That’s the [England] manager’s choice: all he can keep doing is having nights like he’s had [against Villa], it won’t hurt him.”
