It seems to happen earlier and earlier every year. It’s still technically summer, but places like Costco and Dollarama have already rolled out holiday decor. While many on social media are expressing their horror, the stores have a strategy.Lynne Ricker, Instructor at the University of Calgary’s Haskayne School of Business, said stores wouldn’t be doing it if there wasn’t a market for garland and Christmas trees in September.“People do start thinking about it and many people do start their Christmas shopping long before the last minute, last week before Christmas, sort of December rush,” she said.“Retailers have to create an in store experience. They have to have something in there that’s going to look different and exciting and that’s one of the things that they try to do.”Ricker said stores want to get your attention before the competition does.“One of the things that retailers have to think about is having that in store experience and think about pre-empting online buying,” she said. And, she added even tweets complaining about all the red and green could be considered good publicity.
Bob Weber, The Canadian Press EDMONTON — Getting Alberta’s economy running on all its fossil-fuel-powered cylinders is at the heart of the province’s election campaign. But some of Canada’s top energy thinkers — as well as international experts — warn there’s no pedal any premier can stomp to make that engine rev like it used to.“No policy of any Alberta government can change things,” said Mark Jaccard, an energy economist at B.C.’s Simon Fraser University, who has advised governments on climate policy and helps write reports for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.“If Albertans are unwilling to accept a steady oilsands output, with the resulting employment, I fear for them.”The University of Manitoba’s Vaclav Smil, one of Canada’s most widely quoted energy analysts, said any move to renewable energy will take decades, not years. The transition, however, may be felt sooner.“All energy transitions are slow,” he said. “Oil will be with us for decades to come — but not necessarily with high annual growth rates.”The world has changed, said Andrew Grant of the London-based research group Carbon Tracker.“Companies (are) much more reluctant to invest capital in projects that require very, very high capital outlay and take years and years to pay back. That encapsulates the oilsands.”Grant’s group has recently published research suggesting that while renewables are still small, they play a big role in meeting new demand.Solar and wind power provide three per cent of global energy demand, the report said. But between them they account for a quarter of all new generation. It said that by early next decade, power from solar and wind is expected to be as cheap or cheaper than fossil fuels anywhere in the world. Since 2012, more new power generation has come from renewables than fossil fuels.High-cost fossil fuels will become less attractive investments, Grant said. Even without carbon pricing, his group expects fossil fuel demand to peak early next decade.“It’s not necessarily that the change to renewables will be quick,” he said. “But it’s quick enough to make up all of the growth in future energy demand fairly soon.”The same logic applies to transportation. A tiny fraction of the world’s cars are electric, but they make up 22 per cent of growth in sales.Jaccard has run the numbers. In a paper published last year, he concluded that if the world honours its pledge to keep global warming under two degrees Celsius, there’s less than a five per cent chance that new oilsands investment — including pipelines — will be profitable over the next 30 years.“When the global demand for oil stabilizes and starts to fall, Alberta will be hit first,” he said. “It’s (oilsands) among the highest emissions per barrel with the highest production costs.”Nor is the oilpatch as job-rich as it once was.Between 2014 and 2016, production grew by nearly 10 per cent, but 39,000 fewer people were employed. “Albertan oil output increased over the last four years while the jobs were lost,” Jaccard said. Not everyone is as convinced the oilsands have had their day.The International Energy Agency forecasts slightly increased oil demand — about six per cent — through 2040.Smil said global energy transitions have always been slow. It took coal 60 years to go from five to 50 per cent of the world’s energy supply.Grant agrees the current oilsands will make money for years. But the bitumen-fuelled booms that haunt Alberta’s memory and its politics may be a thing of the past.“They’re very high-cost, capital-intensive projects,” he said. “Why would you invest in that when oil prices have been so volatile and there are demand threats on the horizon?“I don’t think any sort of additional pipeline capacity can get around that issue.”— Follow Bob Weber on Twitter at @row1960
14 February 2012United Nations Member States must boost economic empowerment for women to help them realize the global community’s common goals, Deputy Secretary-General Asha-Rose Migiro urged today, warning that gender discrimination around the world was still too widespread. “Too many countries still have discriminatory laws on the books. Laws that prevent women from inheriting property, laws that restrict women’s freedom, and laws that undermine women’s rights are all laws that must be repealed,” Ms. Migiro said in her closing remarks to the Non-Aligned Movement’s (NAM) ministerial meeting on the advancement of women in Doha, Qatar. Spotlighting the struggles faced by women in rural communities around the world, Ms. Migiro also urged governments to economically empower women living in the countryside, noting that the issue was particularly “critical” in NAM states. “All too often, we find the worst poverty in the countryside. And women are too often the poorest of the poor. Rural women really need our attention,” she told the gathered delegates, noting that discrimination against rural women “hurts everyone.” “Millions of rural women do not have equal access to the tools they need to create better living conditions for all. They are shut out when it comes to credit, to information, to services and to technology,” she said. Ms. Migiro called on all governments to expand women’s access to credit, tools and resources in order to help “unleash women’s economic power.” The UN has recently argued that unleashing women’s economic potential can promote economic growth and recovery faster and more equitably while also paving the way for other women’s rights – a necessary step in achieving the anti-poverty targets known as the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by their 2015 deadline. “This progress will be critical in helping reach larger global targets, especially the Millennium Development Goals,” the Deputy Secretary-General added. “And women’s achievement is essential for the success of this year’s Rio+20 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development. We absolutely must empower women to create the future we want.” Ms. Migiro also pointed to the progress made by the UN’s youngest agency, UN Women, noting that as it entered its second year, it was determined to do even more to deliver on the Organization’s promises to advance women’s issues, including leadership and political participation, the expansion of economic opportunities, working for an end to gender-based violence, and increasing women’s contributions to peace.
SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, FLA. (WSVN) – Police are investigating after, they said, a man opened fire on a vehicle in the parking lot of Tropical Park, Wednesday night, wounding a woman inside.According to officials, the shooting stemmed from an argument over a parking spot, between 48-year-old Michael Levy and 63-year-old Rudy Velasquez.Police said Levy and his wife were practicing parking, when Velasquez confronted Levy about his car blocking the handicap spaces. That’s when Levy pulled out a gun from his car, went behind a tree and opened fire, striking Velazquez’s wife, Cecilia Gonzales.Gonzales was hit in the arm. She was then transported to Kendall Regional Hospital in stable condition. She is expected to be OK.The chaos caught park goers off guard. “Caught me by surprise- all the lights, helicopters,” said one witness. “It really caught me by surprise because it’s a real safe park. I’ve never seen any problems over here.”Police held everyone involved for questioning as they conducted their investigation. However, no arrests were made.Tropical Park is a popular place for people to come exercise. However, the shooting took place in a parking lot away from the baseball and soccer fields. The Sockeye Fire which devastated Willow in 2015 (Photo courtesy of the Mat-Su Borough)Did an Anchorage couple start the 2015 wildfire that devastated a big swath of Willow?Listen nowThat’s the question for a Palmer jury, which heard opening statements Thursday as the trial over what became known as the Sockeye Fire began.Prosecutors and state fire investigators say Greg Imig and Amy DeWitt are to blame. But defense attorneys for the husband and wife told jurors that their own experts can prove otherwise.Imig and DeWitt face charges of reckless endangerment, criminally negligent burning and burning without a permit. The fire started June 14, 2015, and in the matter of a few days had charred thousands of acres and dozens of homes in Willow, home to many of Alaska’s dog mushers. The fire forced mandatory evacuations and killed pets and sled dogs as it exploded through the area during those dry, windy days.Investigators say they tracked the massive blaze back to smoldering embers from an illegal brush fire that Imig and DeWitt set in an earthen pit after clearing land on their Willow property.Standing outside the courtroom just before the trial started, musher DeeDee Jonrowe, a veteran of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, fought back tears and said it had been a long two-year wait to see Imig and DeWitt in court.“I’m anxious to just look ‘em in the eye and see how they feel about destroying so many people’s lives,” Jonrowe said. “We lost everything we’ve ever owned in the last, all of our lives. We lost our house, our two-story house, was turned into 3 inches of ash and an 8-foot hole in the ground.”Inside the courtroom, several other victims sat in the front row with Jonrowe as the trial began.Prosecutor Eric Senta described to the jury how evidence and testimony will show the fire crept away from the illegal burn pit through what are called microfuels, tiny, dry, dead leaves and sticks on the ground.“Slowly at first, but getting stronger and stronger as it spread further into the dense forest,” Senta said. “After several feet of traveling the small dead leaves and twigs, the fire grew hot enough to catch the branches of one of those bone dry white spruce trees, and that tree went up like last year’s dead Christmas tree.”Senta said that is when — after calling 911 — the couple and their son fled in an RV and drove home to Anchorage. All the while, Senta said, firefighters and good Samaritans rushed to evacuate people in the growing fire’s path, including some who had to run for their lives. When it was the defense’s turn to lay out their case, attorney Kevin Fitzgerald told the jury that the prosecutor’s theory defied common sense.Fitzgerald said the husband and wife admit they did not have a burn permit that day — permits had in fact been suspended — but they saw the fire well after it had started coming toward them from someone else’s land. And the family claimed they fled because 911 dispatchers told them to evacuate. The defense’s expert witness will show the fire investigators’ work should have been deemed inconclusive and that they were wrong about the pit, Fitzgerald said.“He will tell you affirmatively that this pit was not the cause of the Sockeye Fire,” Fitzgerald said.
Fifty women hosted guests at their table with hospitality and with gifts. (Photo by A. Lois de Laine) It was a gang related event but not one was hurt except for the few who almost died laughing. It was that kind of gathering when the Sweetheart Gang shared the dais with AFRO Publisher Rev. Frances ‘Toni’ Draper at the sold out 3rd Annual AFRO Tea. With the theme being Our Mothers, Mentors, Mavens, the stories that emerged engendered corporate tears and laughter all at the same time.“We knew the subject of women would be a great gathering point, but we couldn’t have imagined its power to unite 500 people in just a few minutes,” Rev. Draper said. “It was wonderful to honor the women who created us as well as those who sustain us, and even ourselves.” The Tea that started three years ago with 300 guests in Sharon Baptist Church, on April 27 filled the largest room at The Forum Caterers on Primrose Lane. Each table was hosted by a community leader, an AFRO employee and other volunteers with a flair for hospitality. “Each host brought her own centerpiece to set the theme for her table,” according to Diane Hocker, AFRO Director of Community Relations.“And many of the attendees are repeat guests who’ve come to each Tea so far.” Caleen Sinnette Jennings’ stories had the Tea audience captivated. (Photo by A. Lois de Laine) The featured guests were the Rev. Dorothy Boulware, compiler, and contributing authors of Tales of the Sweetheart Gang and its sequels. Each chapter in each of these books is a woman’s story of her mother or her father.“We began with the mothers, and I had no idea the emotion the mere suggestion would raise,” said Rev. Boulware. “I don’t remember where or when the idea surfaced, but I got eager responses and every writer met her deadline.” Some had to fight through crisis moments to get it done.“One author’s brother died near the deadline, but she still managed to get her chapter done with the help of a mild extension,” Rev. Boulware said.“We were reminded that mother-daughter relationship is an interesting dynamic and can be a massive love-hate note.”The panel, moderated by Rev. Draper, focused on the wonderful strength and character of women who’ve affected the lives of other women in miraculous ways.Authors the Rev. Doris Gaskins, Tiffany Ginyard, AFRO managing editor and Tyra Williams, former AFRO copy editor, joined Rev. Boulware on the panel. Carter Legacy Singers filled the air with marvelous tones. The last eruption was in 1990. A new eruption started in December 2010 and presented the first-ever opportunity to observe such episodic storms from a spacecraft in orbit around Saturn. Here, we analyze images acquired with the Cassini Imaging Science Subsystem (ISS), which captured the storm’s birth, evolution and demise. In studying the end of the convective activity, we also analyze the Saturn Electrostatic Discharge (SED) signals detected by the Radio and Plasma Wave Science (RPWS) instrument. Explore further This series of images from NASA’s Cassini spacecraft orbiting Saturn shows the evolution of a great storm of 2010-2011. Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech/SSI Saturn experiences quasi-periodic planet-encircling storms. The latest significant, well-observed storm started on Dec. 5, 2010 and lasted until the end of 2011. Events like storms can be identified visually and through radio noise; thus, instruments onboard Cassini such as the Cassini Imaging Science Subsystem (ISS) and the Radio and Plasma Wave Science (RPWS), allowed scientists to obtain high-precision measurements of these violent outbursts in the planet’s atmosphere.Recently, a team of researchers led by Kunio Sayanagi of Hampton University in Virginia, analyzed the data provided by ISS and RPWS to study the storm’s birth, evolution, and demise. ISS obtained wide-angle pictures of the storm with a resolution of 60 to 120 km per pixel to study the vertical cloud structure. The instrument also allowed the team to measure cloud motions in order to reveal the atmospheric dynamics of the storm region. RPWS provided crucial information about the configuration of Saturn’s magnetic field, ionosphere, plasma, and lightning from the planet’s atmosphere.”We analyze Cassini ISS images and RPWS data to investigate the temporal evolution of the 2010-2011 planet-encircling storm. (…) Our study analyzes images acquired using the wide-angle camera’s CB2 (750 nm), MT2 (727 nm), and MT3 (889 nm) filters to study the vertical cloud structure. (…) We also present analysis of RPWS data that shows near-simultaneous coverage of the end of the convecting phase of the storm,” the scientists wrote in the paper.According to the research, the storm erupted out of a previously known feature called the String of Pearls (SoPs)—a chain of about 26 cyclones located at 33° N planetocentric latitude. Afterwards, the outburst grew and engulfed the entire latitude zone. The scientists noted that on January 11, 2011, the dimensions of the storm’s “head” were 9,200 km and up to 34,000 km in the north-south and east-west dimensions, respectively. They also emphasized that this storm spawned the largest tropospheric vortex ever seen on Saturn.”On January 11, 2011, the anticyclone was sized 11,000 km by 12,000 km in the north-south and east-west directions, respectively. (…) With the east-west diameter of 12,000 km, the new anticyclonic vortex became greater in size than any tropospheric vortex previously seen on Saturn. The rapid growth and shrinkage of the new anticyclone is in stark contrast to the steadiness of anticyclonic vortices on Jupiter,” the paper reads. The study notes major changes in the storm dynamics after June 20, 2011 when the storm’s head collided with the anticyclone after the anticyclone’s longitude trailed 360° longitude behind the core. After this collision, the storm’s convective activity displayed a major decline. However, the storm left the region between 25°N and 40°N in a highly disturbed state. According to the paper, these atmospheric events also altered the zonal mean wind profile of the storm latitudes. The researchers expect that the storm of 2010-2011 will have lasting effects on Saturn’s northern hemisphere.”The aftermath of the latest storm should have an effect that may last for up to a decade, and a continuing monitoring of Saturn from the orbiting vantage point of Cassini spacecraft should reveal further details of the dynamic event,” the scientists concluded. © 2016 Phys.org (Phys.org)—The NASA/ESA Cassini spacecraft has made plenty of groundbreaking discoveries, outstandingly improving our knowledge of Saturn and its moons, including our understanding of violent processes in the atmosphere of our solar system’s second-largest planet. Now, a new research paper published July 26 on arXiv.org, which details the dynamics and evolution of Saturn’s great storm of 2010-2011, marks another important study based on the data provided by Cassini’s scientific instruments. Pietersen, in one of several controversial claims in his recently-published autobiography, accused England’s senior bowlers and wicketkeeper Matt Prior of aggressively demanding apologies from team-mates not in their clique for any mistakes they made while fielding.Retired off-spinner Graeme Swann, one of the bowlers singled out by Pietersen, said Wednesday there was ‘absolutely no bullying’ but Ponting, Australia’s captain from 2004-11 supported the claims of England’s all-time leading run-scorer. During President Laura Chinchilla’s term from 2010-2014, administration officials and lawmakers passed nine pieces of legislation and one executive decree aimed at helping middle-income Ticos buy homes. Yet despite the effort, little was accomplished toward the goal of increasing the number of homeowners nationwide. That is one of the conclusions of the “State of Housing and Urban Development in Costa Rica 2013,” a comprehensive report presented Wednesday by the Foundation for the Promotion of Housing (FUPROVI).According to FUPROVI, the Chinchilla administration issued a total of 42,554 housing bonds, while the previous administration of Óscar Arias (2006-2010) issued 40,070.The study determined that legislation promoting housing subsidies and other measures provided access to partial or temporary home payments and did little to help struggling families buy their own homes. This occurred, the report said, despite a Central Bank order allowing national banks to lower their minimum reserve limits, which in turn facilitated more lending.FUPROVI study director Franklin Solano said that most middle-class families are priced out of the current housing market. For example, the monthly minimum wage for a non-skilled worker, according to the Labor Ministry, is only ₡278,207 ($520). A middle-class family with a minimum monthly income of ₡674,837 ($1,200) can purchase a home with a maximum value of ₡30 million (₡56,000). And those, Solano said, “are very hard to find because market prices are well above that.”The same family would be required by banks and other financial agencies to place a down payment of ₡9 million ($16,850) in order to secure a loan, and monthly payments then would total ₡236,193 ($440) for 30 years.Families who want a home that costs more than ₡47 million ($75,000) are required to have a monthly income of at least ₡1 million ($ 1,800). The down payment for a ₡38 million ($71,000) loan is ₡9.5 million ($18,000). Monthly payments then would total ₡363,862 ($680) for 30 years.“Banks have money to lend, but there are very few affordable options on the market, as real estate developers have been investing in very high market segments for homes where the profit level is higher,” FUPROVI President Eloísa Ulibarri said.According to the report, the housing market in the Central Region ranges from ₡55-110 million ($100,000-200,000) – beyond reach of most middle-class households. Today, only a “very limited number of housing options” exist under ₡50 million ($93,000) , and many of those are beyond middle-income budgets. The FUPROVI study also noted that although the number of housing bonds issued during Chinchilla’s administration only slightly surpassed the number granted during Arias’ term, the amount of investment increased. The average housing bond issued during Arias’ administration was ₡6 million ($11,200) per family. For Chinchilla’s administration, that number was ₡7.2 million ($13,500), according to the report.FUPROVI’s Solano noted that, “Chinchilla’s government partially met their housing goals. They failed to build more homes, but they increased the amount of financing.” Facebook Comments Related posts:Costa Rican lawmakers move forward with bill to lower cap on rent hikes How Solís’ administration plans to turn one of Costa Rica’s biggest slums into a park Government postpones project to expand Circunvalación beltway Housing Ministry again postpones relocation of San José slum
In December last year, Qantas reported underlying losses of up to AU$300 million for the first half FY2014 and announced plans to slash 1,000 jobs, citing weakened market conditions. Qantas Airways have tough times ahead, given the difficult platform from which the airline must attempt to regain its market lead, according to new research results. Research derived from OAG’s Frequency and Capacity Trend Statistics (FACTS) report for January 2014 revealed that Australia’s domestic aviation market, dominated by Qantas and subsidiary Jetstar, has suffered significant consolidation. “Although the outlook seems challenging for Qantas at the start of 2014, its new relationships with Emirates and China Southern may prove to be strategically sound moves and provide a much needed shake-up of the Qantas-Asia network,” Mr Grant said. Australia’s domestic aviation marketplace witnessed a 38 percent reduction in the number of carriers operating in the last five years; with 16 carriers as of January 2014, down from 26 in 2008. Qantas’ share of the Australia-Asia market has fallen from 14 percent in January 2013 to 11 percent in January 2014, while the airline’s international business has remained flat over the last five years. Go back to the enewsletterBoutique travel specialist, Italian Villa Vacations, has released a series of seven-night packages to showcase some of Italy’s most popular tourist hot spots including Umbria, Tuscany and the Lakes district. Designed for small groups of up to 12 guests, the packages are centred around stays at hand-picked luxury villas in each region and include daily sightseeing and activities, fine dining, private wine tastings and more. The concept of being based in one location for a week offers travellers a less stressful, more in-depth experience at a relaxed pace compared to traditional tour operators, which tend to have early starts, rush through destinations and the inconvenience of moving hotels, says Italian Villa Vacations’ owner/operator, Jane Black.Last year, Black created a new business arm, Italy Culture Tours, in partnership with her Aunty and fellow “Italophile”, Jane Finemore. A one-time exchange student, Black lives and breathes Italy, and turned that passion into a travel business that is thriving. Having curated week-long villa rentals and activities for FIT clients on a daily basis for the past 12 years, Black noticed a gap in the market for small group villa vacations, where like-minded travellers or friends could enjoy the comforts of villa life.Italy Culture Trails’ maiden package is The Umbria Chapter itinerary utilising the family-run Villa Bellissima, a newly restored 300-year-old farmhouse located in a picturesque valley between Rome and Florence. Villa Bellissima has six king bedrooms, each with a fireplace and ensuite, an infinity-edge pool, gym and multiple indoor and outdoor living spaces.“It becomes their home away from home for guests,” Black told LATTE.“Feedback from my clients is that moving from one hotel to another is stressful and can be exhausting. That’s not a holiday. At Villa Bellissima, guests become familiar with the town, the villa, its grounds and the family. This is an immersive experience, but guests aren’t sitting still. They’ll explore three different regions over the week – Umbria, Tuscany and Lazio – but there’s no hassle of having to change beds every night,” Black said.Villa BellissimaThe itinerary offers a mix of tours such as a day trips to Orvieto where guests enjoy lunch in an ancient grotto and visit an archaeological dig site that’s closed to the general public. Other days guests explore Assisi, Montepulciano, Siena and Civita di Bagnoregio. Some days focus on food and wine experiences, including a private Michelin-starred tasting lunch at Relais & Chateaux’ Il Falconiere in Cortona, while others are centred around culture and history.Days trips are escorted by driver/guides in two Mercedes-Benz vans, ensuring comfort and access to locations unattainable by touring coaches.Villa BellissimaThe itinerary offers plenty of flexibility and free-time, should guests wish to take a break from activities. One busy day of exploring is generally followed by another at a more relaxed pace. All meals are included, with breakfast at Villa Bellissima every day and lunch or dinner either off-site or back at the villa. Guests can also get as hands-on as they like, helping the resident cook prepare meals if they wish and going to the market to select produce. The escorted Umbria Chapter operates during the shoulder season, outside of the summer peak when the weather is more comfortable, the Italian landscapes not so dry and there are fewer crowds, says Black.
