Linda Gentles’ next court appearance is scheduled to go ahead on Tuesday (Mar 10th).Gentles faces 15 criminal charges in relation to a credit-card scam she was allegedly operating out of a Fort St. John travel agency. There have already been several delays in the case, mainly because of Gentles’ inability to procure legal council. – Advertisement -The proceedings are scheduled to begin at 10am.
“Today I think was a clear difference in the desire to fight for the targets,” said Mourinho, whose side missed the chance to all but secure second place in the Premier League behind champions Manchester City.“They clearly showed that, for them, it’s more important for them to stay in the Premier League than for us to finish second. They showed it from the first minute, and we didn’t show that.“I am disappointed because second is important for me. I’m not sure every one of my players is disappointed.”Chants of “We are staying up” rang around a packed house at the Amex Stadium at full-time as victory moved Brighton up to 11th and more importantly eight points clear of the bottom three. With third-bottom Southampton and 17th-placed Swansea to meet on Tuesday, Brighton now can’t now be relegated.“I felt that we’ve deserved to stay in this league for our season’s work,” said Brighton boss Chris Hughton.“But if we’d lost today and the next two, it would have been a real feeling of injustice had we gone down. So relief that we’ve done it now, but I’m also really proud of a group of players.”By contrast, defeat means United must wait to secure second as they remain five points clear of Liverpool with Tottenham a point further adrift.United were without either of the injured Romelu Lukaku or Alexis Sanchez, and their firepower was missed as Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford failed to make the most of rare chances to start up front.– ‘I know my players better’ –“For many months you are always asking me why this player doesn’t play? Why that player doesn’t play? Why this player is on the bench? Why always Lukaku?” added Mourinho.“I know my players better than you, and probably you don’t know them so well to be always with these questions.”The visitors did have the ball in the net after just four minutes when Marouane Fellaini turned Rashford’s free-kick in from close range, but the Belgian was rightly flagged for offside.United secured a top-four finish by beating Arsenal 2-1 last weekend, and Brighton’s more desperate need for the points shone through.David de Gea was the only United player selected in the PFA’s Premier League team of the year and the Spaniard showed why he has again been his side’s outstanding performer this season with a stunning fingertip save to turn a dipping volley from Glenn Murray behind.Brighton’s survival party had been put on hold by a run of seven games without a win.But they got the helping hand they needed from the goal-line technology system to seal another campaign in the Premier League on their return to the top flight after 34 years on 57 minutes. The dangerous Jose Izquierdo got to the byline and when his cross was parried by De Gea, the ball crossed the line from Gross’s header by the finest of margins before being hooked clear by Marcos Rojo.City can now break United’s record winning margin of 18 points from the 1999/2000 season should they win their remaining three games.Matt Ryan saved well from Rashford before Martial and Jesse Lingard fired off target as Brighton held out despite a late United rally.0Shares0000(Visited 1 times, 1 visits today) 0Shares0000Brighton secured their place in the Premier League next season as Pascal Gross’s solitary goal inflicted on Manchester United © AFP / Glyn KIRKBRIGHTON, United Kingdom, May 5 – Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho took aim at his players for not having the required desire in a 1-0 defeat to Brighton on Friday that secured the Seagulls’ place in the Premier League next season.Just over two weeks ahead of the FA Cup final against his old club Chelsea, United boss Mourinho made six changes and was punished as Pascal Gross’s second-half header secured Brighton’s first win over the Red Devils since 1982.
MINISTER RING ANNOUNCES €200K FOR MOUNTAIN RESCUE TEAMSMINISTER RING ANNOUNCES €200K FOR MOUNTAIN RESCUE TEAMS
A special one-off grant of €200,000 for Mountain Rescue Ireland to purchase new vehicles and equipment has been announced by Minister for Transport, Tourism & Sport Leo Varadkar & Minister of State for Tourism & Sport Michael Ring. The Ministers made the announcement in Dáil Éireann and went on to meet with officials from Mountain Rescue Ireland in Government Buildings.“Mountain rescue teams play a hugely important role in supporting trekkers and mountaineers. Hill walking and adventure sports are getting more popular by the year, and play an increasingly important role in tourism. “The various mountain rescue teams work closely with the Irish Coast Guard and the Gardaí on rescue operations. My Department has stabilised current funding for mountain rescue since the general election, providing €363,000 for day to day operations since then. But having met Mountain Rescue Ireland earlier this year, and discussed ongoing issues with equipment and vehicles, we also decided to provide a special once-off sports capital allocation of €200,000. This grant will be used for new vehicles and equipment with the precise details to be arranged between my officials and Mountain Rescue Ireland.”Minister Ring added: “As a West of Ireland Minister I am very familiar with the excellent work done by mountain rescue teams. I want to pay tribute to the heroism of these brave men and women who go out in all conditions, throughout the year. We have some of the harshest weather in the West of Ireland, and we feel the full force of the Atlantic storms. I’m delighted that we could make this special allocation and I look forward to building on this close relationship with Mountain Rescue Ireland.”Separately, Minister Varadkar said he plans to hold discussions with Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald about improving current oversight arrangements. Under Ireland’s Framework for Emergency Management, mountain rescue teams fall under the remit of the Department of Justice & Equality and are coordinated and tasked by the Gardaí. However, the Department of Transport administers the grant scheme, while the Coast Guard chairs the National Coordinating Committee for Mountain & Cave Rescue.Minister Varadkar said: “We need greater clarity concerning which Department is responsible for funding and supporting mountain rescue teams. I intend to discuss this matter with my colleague Minister Fitzgerald and provide a better arrangement for mountain rescue.” MINISTER RING ANNOUNCES €200K FOR MOUNTAIN RESCUE TEAMS was last modified: June 27th, 2014 by John2Share this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)
AD Quality Auto 360p 720p 1080p Top articles1/5READ MOREWalnut’s Malik Khouzam voted Southern California Boys Athlete of the Week Olson matched a school-record by throwing five touchdown passes, none more enthralling than a 9-yard floater to a leaping Marcus Everett in the corner of the end zone with 44 seconds left to cap an 11-play, 96-yard drive, and pull the Bruins even at 38-38. Olson completed 31 of 43 for a career-high 338 yards, including 6 of 7 for 71 yards on the final drive of regulation. “This is hard on the heart doing these comebacks,” said Drew, who finished with 109 yards on 29 carries. “Your heart goes bad after a while. It’s never easy. Victories are never easy, and this just shows you how hard it is.” UCLA (6-0, 3-0 Pac-10) became bowl eligible already, moved into a tie with USC atop the league standings, and could move into the top 10 when the national polls are released today. Wazzu (3-3, 0-3) has lost three straight. “What an effort,” UCLA coach Karl Dorrell said. “A lot of heart on this football team, a lot of fortitude. The guys just believe they can win all the time. To do that on the road, in this kind of environment, loud stadium and everybody’s against you but probably a thousand fans, that was fun to see. “I might have a heart attack one of these days. But I’ll tell you what, if I have to win ’em all like this, I’ll take it every time. What a great win, a great comeback. What a great day for UCLA football.” After UCLA held Wazzu to Loren Langley’s 37-yard field goal to start overtime, Drew carried four times for 19 yards in overtime. His 4-yard run took the Bruins inside the 1-yard line, and his de-helmeting plunge one play later sparked a wild celebration along the UCLA sideline. It is the Bruins’ first win at Martin Stadium since 1993, and ended a four-game losing streak to the Cougars. It also is the first time anyone on UCLA’s roster defeated Wazzu. Wazzu tailback Jerome Harrison, who blistered the Bruins for 247 yards and three touchdowns in an upset win last season, scored twice (57 and 21 yards), but had just 78 yards after halftime. Because of Harrison’s start, UCLA trailed 21-0 after the first play of the second quarter, were behind 28-7 midway through the half and fell behind 38-21 when Cougars quarterback Alex Brink scored on a 4-yard bootleg with 23 seconds left in the third quarter. But then came the fourth quarter, which UCLA dominated. Harrison, who ran through seams and darted past defenders, was held to five yards on four carries in the fourth quarter. Brink, who was 19 of 33 for 169 yards, was 3 of 8 for 26 yards in the fourth, and the Cougars managed just two first downs and 47 yards of offense. Meanwhile, Olson started the comeback with a 9-yard touchdown pass to tight end Marcedes Lewis 28 seconds into the fourth quarter as UCLA pulled within 38-28. Justin Medlock added 36-yard field with 9:56 remaining in regulation to make it 38-31 before Olson took over on his own 4-yard line with 4:52 to play. 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. PULLMAN, Wash. — With his helmet buried amid a pile of humanity and his tinted dreadlocks swishing from side to side, UCLA tailback Maurice Drew emerged from the bodies and lifted the ball skyward. Moments later an official raced in from the side, raised his two arms, and 64 Bruins followed suit. After years of frustrating fourth-quarter collapses, UCLA now views late comeback as child’s play as the 12th-ranked Bruins matched its largest rally in school history, also overcame a 17-point fourth-quarter deficit and stunned Washington State 44-41 in overtime Saturday in front of 35,117 at Martin Stadium. Drew’s overtime heroics offset a career-high 260 yards rushing by Wazzu’s Jerome Harrison. And it was made possible by Drew Olson’s superb evening.
DONEGAL PRIEST AND CHOIR SINGER IN UNHOLY ROW OVER SONGDONEGAL PRIEST AND CHOIR SINGER IN UNHOLY ROW OVER SONG
An unholy row has broken out after a church singer claims she was ‘verbally attacked’ by a priest for singing a popular song in honour of dead relatives.Singer SaraSara Laughlin claims she was shouted at by Fr. Shane Gallagher after singing the popular hit song ‘Voice of an Angel.’However Father Gallagher has disputed what went on, telling Donegal Daily that he felt he had been cyber-bullied by others commenting about the incident on Facebook. Teacher Sara performed the song at St Bridget’s Church in Lettermacaward, Co Donegal as part of an anniversary Mass for her late grandmother and uncle. But after the Mass on Saturday evening, Sara was asked to come into the sacristy of the church by Fr. Gallagher, she says.A disagreement ensued which Sara claims left her in tears, she told Donegal Daily.St Bridget’s Church in LettermacawardSara, a teacher and also director of the Donegal Youth Choir, alleged that Fr Gallagher said he did not want the ‘Sarah McLochlan song’ performed in the church. However Sara explained it was written by Fr Liam Lawton and was actually in her hymn book.Sara broke down and cried but now says she was then verbally attacked by the priest who allegedly told her “play all your emotions.”When Sara explained the song was for her late grandmother and uncle the priest, she claims he simply said “big deal” and when she said she was leaving he replied “great…go.”The church singer took to Facebook and has been inundated with messages of support and also outrage and anger towards the priest who allegedly attacked Sara. She said one of the reasons she posted a message on Facebook was to let people know why she would not be singing in the church ever again. “I have never been so insulted and spoken to in such a manner in my life! I treat the Mass with great dignity and respect and it means the world to me,” she said.“I have not been able to stop crying and shaking since.“I am gutted, shaken to the core, insulted, hurt, sad, afraid, bewildered and unable to stop crying! I am writing this so people will know why our voices won’t be heard in the chapel so close to our hearts anymore and it is with a heavy heart I write it,” said Sara. She has even received a message of support from Fr Liam Lawton who wrote the song. The priest said he read Sara’s message with great sadness and said her gift and talent far outweighed the injustice which has been done to her.And Father Lawton pleaded “Please don’t allow one person to destroy what you have to offer. You need to concentrate on your beauty and gift as, long, long after this experience is over and forgotten you will continue to touch hearts and lives with your beautiful gift.“And for what it’s worth you sing “Voice of an Angel” just like I imagined it should be sung when I wrote it.”She has received huge support from many in her local community.Last night many well-wishers called to her home to show support for the well-known choir singer following the incident. Many have encouraged her to report the matter to the Bishop of Raphoe, Dr Philip Boyce.Sara’s mother Eileen also witnessed the alleged incident along with her husband Chris, a well-known businessman in the Lettermacaward area.Eileen said she is “absolutely heartbroken” at what she witnessed. But she has vowed to have the matter “dealt with.”“The mass tonight was for my mum and my brother, who we lost at the age of 22. I asked Sara to sing the hymn ‘the voice of an angel’ for my mum tonight and I turned to my sister and said with tears in my eyes “this is for mum”.“We all love the music of Fr Liam Lawton so much and that hymn is so special as we think of mum and Tony as our angels in the darkness we have already had to face in life.“I am saddened to the core. Already the support of the community has been overwhelming and heartwarming and there is no way that this will not be dealt with. Thanks so much to all the people who have visited the house and showed their support,” she said. However Fr Gallagher said there is two sides to every story and said some of what Sara claimed is simply not true.He said he is considering issuing statement on the issue and if that statement is forthcoming, Donegal Daily will publish it in full.DONEGAL PRIEST AND CHOIR SINGER IN UNHOLY ROW OVER SONG was last modified: October 7th, 2013 by StephenShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)

The issue of a Dalit groom being barred from riding a horse during his wedding procession rocked the Haryana Assembly which saw heated exchanges on Tuesday with Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar saying a minister has been rushed to the village to ease tensions. Raising the issue during Zero Hour, Congress leader and former Speaker Kuldeep Sharma said members of the Dalit community from Sagga village have been forced to leave their homes and were now sitting on protest in Karnal. Heated exchanges ensued as Health Minister Anil Vij attacked the Congress, saying it has no moral standing to raise the issue.
An Olympian in high heels brings rare dash of glam to Afghan pollsAn Olympian in high heels brings rare dash of glam to Afghan polls
In high heels, dark glasses and heavy make-up, Robina Jalali looks more like a celebrity looking for a photo-op as she talks to eager youth and frowning men.Afghanistan’s former Olympian Robina Jalali. But stretch your memory and you will remember the glamourous 25-year-old as the sprinter who was hailed as a hero during the Beijing Olympics, despite finishing last. She was the only Afghan woman athlete to participate in the events and hogged limelight for running in track pants and a headscarf.Jalali is running again, this time for the parliamentary elections on September 18.She is one of the 406 female candidates contesting for the 64 seats reserved for women in the 249-member lower house, Wolesi Jirga. And she has again dared to be different. Unlike others who are covered up in the traditional burqa and robes, Jalali campaigns in trousers and designer kurtas with her head covered with a colourful stole.Perhaps this is the reason she is facing criticism from some quarters as being a non-serious candidate who is just using the women’s quota to enter politics.”If you want to run for modelling, you need a pretty face and a wonderful body. But for parliament, the criteria are different,” a leading woman parliamentarian took a jibe clearly aimed at Jalali. Jalali is not bothered by criticism. After all, she has faced it earlier. The international media may have hailed her courage when she participated in the Beijing Olympics in 2008, and earlier in Athens in 2004, but back home she got little support or encouragement.advertisement”I was the only girl running with men…,” she said. “I did not have popular support. People spoke ill of me going on trips.” People’s disapproval didn’t matter. What was worrying was the threat from the Taliban.”When I started in the sports world, I got threatening leaflets from the Taliban thrown at my house,” Jalali said. But that did not stop her from pursuing her dreams then. And they have failed to deter her now. Like other candidates, particularly women, she is also facing intimidation from the Taliban who have threatened to target anyone associated with the polls. But being a woman in Afghanistan, fear is something Jalali has lived with. She says she doesn’t care about the Taliban and is not going to run away.To her critics who question her suitability for the political office she is aiming for, Jalali cites her experience with her father’s non-profit organisation and her stint with the Kabul Bank as a secretary for three years. She is one of the nine women tipped to win a seat among the 90 running in Kabul. And if she wins, she has her priorities clear-to focus on equal rights for women. To achieve her goal, she has broken yet another tradition. She remains single in a country where most women are married off as teenagers because marriage and husband could come in the way of pursuing politics. But it remains to be seen how much success Jalali gets in her mission at a time when the Afghan government is seeking reconciliation with the Taliban.
