No alcohol was found in his system.ADVERTISEMENT Woods announced last month he had completed treatment at an out-of-state clinic to deal with his use of prescription medications. His 79 PGA Tour victories and 14 major titles both rank No. 2 all-time. He would also have to attend a workshop where victims of impaired drivers detail how their lives were damaged and face other conditions. Since the program began four years ago, almost 2,400 defendants have enrolled, according to the Palm Beach County State Attorney’s Office. If convicted of DUI, Woods would have faced a fine of between $500 and $1,000, had his car impounded for 10 days and other conditions. He also could have been jailed for up to six months, although that was unlikely, received probation and lost his driver’s license for six months to a year. The DUI arrest was the first time Woods had been in trouble since Thanksgiving weekend 2009, when he plowed his SUV into a tree and a fire hydrant outside his then-Windermere, Florida, home. That led to revelations that he had multiple extramarital affairs and a divorce from his wife Elin Nordegren, the mother of his two children. He spent 45 days in a Mississippi clinic where he was treated for sex addiction.Woods was arrested at 2 a.m. May 29 about 15 miles from his home in Jupiter, Florida, when officers found him unconscious in his Mercedes-Benz, which was parked awkwardly on the side of the road and had damage to the driver’s side. It’s not clear how he damaged the car. Officers checked the area but didn’t find that he had hit anything.Woods didn’t know where he was when asked by officers, and he stumbled and swayed through a field sobriety test, police dashboard camera video showed. Woods told officers he was taking the painkiller Vicodin and Xanax, which treats anxiety and insomnia, to cope with his fourth back surgery in April.ADVERTISEMENT DILG, PNP back suspension of classes during SEA Games MOST READ View comments
Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni poses with the World Cup trophy in front of the Gateway of India in Mumbai. Can star Manchester United footballer Wayne Rooney learn a thing or two from India’s World Cup winning cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni on how to react under pressure situations? a leading daily asked on Wednesday in an interesting comparison between two high-profile sportspersons.Rooney, who was handed a two-match ban after he swore repeatedly at a television camera in an English Premier League match on Saturday, earns about 42 million pound sterling over five years but his behaviour has come in for severe criticism. On the other hand, Dhoni has shown immense calm amid intense pressure to lead the Indian team to cricket World Cup glory.”On the same Saturday, over on the other side of the world, another man was under more pressure than even Rooney could imagine. A small town-boy, sturdy, stubbly and with a most magnificent nose, M S Dhoni was leading India in their pursuit of the cricket World Cup against Sri Lanka,” a write-up in ‘The Daily Telegraph’ said.”India expected, the astrologers had predicted, it was now up to Dhoni to orchestrate victory. This victory, it was said, would unite the nation, Hindu and Muslim, rich and poor and give Sachin Tendulkar his first World Cup trophy at probably his last tournament,” Tanya Aldred wrote in the newspaper.”There was not a seat in the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, tickets had sold for 12 times the asking price, 67.6 million were watching on television in India alone. The din was transcendental, the weight on Dhoni’s shoulders oppressive.advertisementIt said the pressure and weight of expectations Dhoni carried in a cricket-crazy country was no less than that of Rooney, who is one of the highest-earning and most high-profile footballers in the world.”Dhoni is no puritan, he is paid handsomely for his endorsements, and has a fleet of steely motorbikes and an array of cars in his garage. His rewards are many and varied – the village where he was born, Lwali in the Almora district, is now to have a new road because of his exploits. But in the pressure-cooker of Indian cricket, which can be as vituperative as any football-fan site in the UK, he has managed to keep his head.”Could Rooney learn from him? Who knows, but in the end his biggest punishment will be in how he is remembered. Only he can decide whether he wants his legacy to be that of a brilliant footballer who fulfilled his youthful promise or as a talent tarnished by his inability to control his temper. And although he is only 25, time is running out,” the write-up said.-With PTI inputs

As competitors gear up to put on display new luxury sport utility vehicles at the Frankfurt auto show , Maserati keeps its fans waiting a little longer as it makes final tweaks to a model meant to reverse falling sales of the Italian brand.Bentley’s Bentayga and Jaguar’s F-Pace will be shown in Frankfurt and deliveries of Tesla’s electric Model X are due to start in two weeks. The love affair with SUVs and their higher ground clearance have also prompted Lamborghini, Aston Martin and Rolls-Royce to seek to compete in the popular segment.Forecaster IHS Automotive expects global sales of premium and luxury SUVs to grow by more than 40 percent to 1.4 million vehicles between 2008 and 2018. Overall SUV sales are expected to triple to more than 25 million over that period.”With gas prices low, it’s a good time to launch an SUV… my only concern is that Maserati may get lost in the clutter because there are so many luxury crossovers coming out at the same time,” said Lincoln Merrihew, an industry consultant at Millward Brown Digital.Set for a 2015 launch according to a growth plan announced last year, the Maserati Levante SUV is now expected to debut by the end of the first quarter of 2016, most likely at the Geneva auto show in March.Workers at the Mirafiori plant in Turin, northern Italy, are preparing for commercial production which Sergio Marchionne, chief executive at Maserati parent Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA), expects to start by January.”It’s a complex car and we need to test it before launching it,” Marchionne said this month.advertisementA Maserati SUV has been in the making for more than a decade since the first concept was presented in 2003.Maserati hopes the Levante will help it emulate the success of Porsche, which set the standard for multiplying sales of an expensive brand without damaging the exclusive image that reaps big profits.Marchionne is betting Maserati can still offer something unique: Italian design and engines made by sister brand Ferrari.Key to Levante’s success will be its reception in North America, home to 40 percent of Maserati’s sales last year.Maserati has a strong image in the United States, combining a recognised racing heritage with Italian luxury, said Jane Nakagawa, managing director at U.S.-based product and market strategy consultancy Portia Consulting.”The chances are always good for luxury brands that don’t have to sell a lot of cars,” she said.Analysts expect the Levante to cover a price range of between 70,000-140,000 euros ($79,051-$158,102), similar to Porsche’s Cayenne, but wonder whether the Maserati SUV will stand out sufficiently to match the success of its German rival, especially as it comes more than a decade later.Marchionne is counting on the Levante to halt a fall in Maserati sales in recent quarters. They fell 11 percent in the first half of the year as higher sales in Europe failed to offset weaker demand from China and the United States.”(The Levante) will certainly change the earnings generation capability of Maserati,” he said. “We need to wait until then.”The brand’s profitability was also hit by worse pricing arrangements for imported vehicles in China and as customers turned to the entry-level Ghibli model at the expense of the higher-margin Quattroporte Coupe. Its operating margin, the rate of underlying profit on its sales, fell to 7 percent in the first six months from 8.7 percent a year earlier.IHS analyst Ian Fletcher said the SUV will do “reasonably well and it may prove better than the Quattroporte purely because customers increasingly (are making the) transition to SUVs”.But Maserati will struggle to meet its goal of growing brand sales nearly five-fold to 75,000 between 2013-18, analysts said. IHS sees Maserati selling just under 48,000 vehicles in 2018, with the Levante contributing around 17,200 vehicles at peak. The performance at Maserati is watched for clues about the potential success of a revamp at sister brand Alfa Romeo which is seen as even more crucial to FCA’s global expansion plan.Alfa’s first new model, the Giulia sedan, will be shown at the Frankfurt auto show.”If Maserati serves as a template for FCA’s rejuvenation efforts at Alfa Romeo it is worth noting that Maserati’s own renaissance seems to have run out of steam after just 24 months,” said Arndt Ellinghorst, an analyst at Evercore ISI.
Watching Michael Orozco’s most famous goal feels like being sucked into some sort of soccer time machine. It was six years ago, but it was a different time. The United States national team was on the way to actually qualifying for the World Cup. Brek Shea and Terrence Boyd were involved in the buildup – just two of a number of up-and-comers in that generation who never came up enough. That moment, scoring the winning goal at the Estadio Azteca, is something Orozco will never forget, not that anyone would let him. Editors’ Picks Man Utd ready to spend big on Sancho and Haaland in January Who is Marcus Thuram? Lilian’s son who is top of the Bundesliga with Borussia Monchengladbach Brazil, beware! Messi and Argentina out for revenge after Copa controversy Best player in MLS? Zlatan wasn’t even the best player in LA! “The video, even my kids have it on the iPad,” Orozco said with a laugh during a conversation with Goal last week. “I came into that camp with just one goal: To make a difference. Thankfully, it happened for me in that 15 or 20 minutes when I got in and played defense, scored the goal. “Getting the first victory for the United States on Mexican soil in the Azteca, which is a stadium that has so much history, I think it was something beautiful, not just for me but for my family. I’m really proud to be part of that moment in history and when I’m at home in Anaheim, California, they remind me of that.” His finish was improbable even at the time, with U.S. supporters expressing shock that it was Orozco who delivered the Stars and Stripes’ first triumph in the Estadio Azteca. A fan’s reaction on a post-match call-in show – “Michael Orozco Fiscal?!” – became a drop on a popular soccer podcast. While that moment still sticks out as the one he’s most known for, it was hardly his only contribution during the Jurgen Klinsmann era. He scored in Panama City to help the U.S. to a 3-2 win in World Cup qualification, and while he didn’t make the roster for Brazil he was back in the starting XI in 2016’s Copa America Centenario. His last appearance in a U.S. shirt was a bench role in the 4-0 defeat to Costa Rica in 2016 – the final match before Klinsmann was given his marching orders during an ill-fated qualification campaign. He hasn’t been called since, and at age 32 knows another opportunity might not come. Yet, Orozco quietly put together a strong season off the radar of U.S. and even most Liga MX fans, helping Lobos BUAP bounce back from a poor showing in the previous tournament. In the Clausura, Lobos should have been relegated but paid a fee to stay in the top division. Orozco arrived on loan from Tijuana in the summer, and several other players were brought in to improve the club. Things still got off to a rough start this season, with Lobos winning just one of its first nine games in the Apertura. But manager Paco Palencia engineered a turnaround, with Lobos losing just once in their last eight matches – that defeat coming to regular-season leader Cruz Azul. Orozco was a big part of the turnaround, playing center back next to a fellow defensive veteran, Maza Rodriguez. He knows it’s time for a new generation of players to emerge for the U.S. national team, but says he’d be thrilled to lend the leadership skills he’s learned at Lobos to the U.S. if the new manager were to give him a chance. “Right now, I’m focused on what I can do here with Lobos, helping to save the team from relegation. My showings on the field speak for themselves,” he said. “I think the national team is in the process right now of changing the whole structure, starting a new cycle, but I’d never close the door on the national team because this is the highest honor a soccer player can have – to one day get there and represent your country with honor. “So, if a call comes, I’ll be there and help however I can help, whether it be motivating or giving my experience or if I’m going to play as well, it’d be a pleasure, a happy moment to be there once again. Not going to the World Cup has left a lot of players ‘marked’, but I think we can overcome that with work.” Relegation is still a real worry for Lobos, even if the team stayed in the first division via unconventional means last time around. Lobos sit in the penultimate place of the league’s relegation table above only Veracruz. Lobos will look to get as many points as possible in the Clausura to get an advantage in Mexico’s system, which sends down the team that has the worst combined record over six short tournaments. Orozco said he has six-months left with Lobos on a year-long loan from Tijuana. But the former Club Puebla player is happy to be back at a city where he spent many years and said he hopes to continue with Lobos – or perhaps even sign a deal to get back in MLS, where he spent 2010 on loan with the Philadelphia Union. “I’d love to, first, save the team with my teammates, possibly re-sign which would be ideal for me and my family,” he said. “Having kids and having to adapt and figure out a new city is difficult. But, look, I’m also not ruling out going to MLS one day, which is something really great and I enjoyed the experience I had in 2010. It was perfect. “Right now, I’m taking on everything calmly. I’ve got six months left. I’m going to give everything for the team to stay up and if we stay there’s the potential plus of getting to the Liguilla and moving forward. But first of all we have to save the team.”

19 March 2009Robust investment into five key sectors, from renewable energy to sustainable transport, could help revive the global economy and boost employment while accelerating the fight against climate change, environmental degradation and poverty, according to the United Nations. The Policy Brief for a Global Green New Deal, developed by economists and the UN ahead of the G-20 meeting of world leaders in London in early April, highlights the benefits of investing a significant amount of the $3 trillion-worth of global stimulus packages in five areas.According to a news release issued by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), these areas include raising the energy efficiency of old and new buildings, as well as renewable energies including wind, solar, geothermal and biomass. The three other areas are sustainable transport including hybrid vehicles, high-speed rail and bus rapid transit systems; the planet’s ecological infrastructure including freshwaters, forests, soils and coral reefs; and sustainable agriculture including organic production.“The G-20 meeting needs to be a milestone in terms of focusing investments that address the crises of today and those emerging from climate change, natural resource scarcity and lack of decent employment for close to 2 billion unemployed or underemployed people over the coming decade,” stated UNEP Executive Director Achim Steiner.“Take energy use in buildings. It can already be cut by 80 per cent in a cost-effective manner using existing technologies,” he noted, adding that additional investments in this sector would not only stimulate the recovery of the construction and allied industries but also generate tens of millions of jobs. The report also calls for specific measures to help poorer countries reach the anti-poverty targets with a 2015 deadline, known as the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), and green their economies. The measures include an expansion of microcredit schemes for clean energy and the greening of overseas development aid.“The large-scale stimulus investments planned over the coming months and the next two to four years represent a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to make a transition to a low-carbon, resource-efficient society – this opportunity must not be lost,” said Mr. Steiner.Pavan Sukhdev, team leader of the UNEP Green Economy initiative, stressed that these recommendations should be discussed over the next few months by world leaders at every major global forum including the G-20 Summit. “The sums of money being lined up to stimulate the global economy, unheard of only 12 months ago, will either mortgage the world’s future based on a ‘business as usual’ model or deliver an opportunity to transition to a new and more sustainable path,” he stated. “That courageous choice needs to be made now and accelerated over the coming weeks and months,” he added.
HAWTHORNE, Calif. – Demand for Tesla Motors’ new lower-priced electric car surprised even the company’s CEO Friday as 198,000 people plunked down $1,000 deposits to reserve their vehicles.“Definitely going to need to rethink production planning,” a surprised CEO Elon Musk said on his Twitter feed.Musk unveiled the car Thursday night at a design studio near Los Angeles. It starts at $35,000 and has a range of 215 miles per charge, which is far more than most people drive each day.The orders came from across the globe even though the car isn’t scheduled for sale until late in 2017. But they could jeopardize a $7,500 U.S. electric car tax credit that many buyers are counting on to reduce the price. The tax credits gradually phase out after a company hits 200,000 in U.S. sales.A Tesla spokeswoman wouldn’t say how many of the 198,000 orders came from the U.S.Thursday night, Musk said Tesla had 115,000 orders since the company started taking them earlier in the day in Australia. There were long lines at Tesla stores from Hong Kong to Austin, Texas, reminiscent of crowds at Apple stores for early models of the iPhone. But the number kept rising into Friday.“Thought it would slow way down today, but Model 3 order count is now at 198k,” Musk tweeted during the afternoon, saying the wait time for the car is “growing rapidly.”The news pushed Tesla shares to a Friday closing price of $237.59, up 3.4 per cent from Thursday. The Model 3 is less than half the cost of Tesla’s previous models, and its range is about double what drivers get from current competitors in its price range, such as the Nissan Leaf and BMW i3.On Twitter, Musk estimated that the average selling price of a Model 3 with options would be around $42,000. So the sales would bring more than $8.3 billion in revenue to Tesla.Prototypes looked like a shorter version of Tesla’s Model S sedan. The Model 3 has a panoramic glass roof and an elongated hood. Inside, it seats five and has the same large touchscreen dashboard as other Teslas. It also has Tesla’s suite of semi-autonomous driving features, including automatic lane changing and lane keeping. Musk said it will accelerate from zero to 60 in less than 6 seconds.Tesla has a history of missing deadlines for its vehicles to hit the market, but Musk said Thursday that he feels “fairly confident” that the Model 3 will come out next year. The lower-priced car is the most serious test yet of 13-year-old Tesla’s ability to go from niche player to a full-fledged automaker. It could be the car that finally makes electrics mainstream — or consumers could continue to be skeptical that electrics will work for everyday use. In the U.S., they still make up less than 1 per cent of annual sales. Either way, the Model 3 is already changing the industry, spurring competitors to speed development of electric cars.General Motors Co. is set to start selling the Chevrolet Bolt electric car at the end of this year with a similar price tag and a 200-mile range. Hyundai’s Ioniq, which has a 110-mile electric range and could match Tesla on price, goes on sale this fall. Audi will follow with an electric SUV in 2018.The orders show there’s real, underlying demand for reasonably priced electric cars with high range, says Edmunds.com senior analyst Jessica Caldwell. Customers put down $1,000 knowing that they’ll probably have to wait two years to get their cars, leading Caldwell to believe it’s more about the cultural phenomenon of Tesla.“You’re not seeing people wait in long lines to purchase a Chevy Bolt, considering it comes out much sooner and the range is about the same,” she said.During his Thursday night presentation, Musk gave details on how electric cars can fit into people’s lives, she said. “You felt like the lifestyle was attainable in his talk,” she said.___Durbin reported from Detroit, where Auto Writer Tom Krisher contributed. The United Nations General Assembly has elected Argentina, Australia, Luxembourg, the Republic of Korea and Rwanda to serve as non-permanent members on the Security Council for two-year terms beginning on 1 January 2013. The five countries obtained the required two-thirds majority of those Member States present and voting in the secret ballot, held at UN Headquarters in New York, to decide on the new composition of the Council, which deals with global peace and security issues. The 193-member Assembly elected Argentina, Australia and Rwanda in a first round of balloting, with the Republic of Korea and Luxembourg elected in a second round. The five newly-elected members will replace Colombia, Germany, India, Portugal and South Africa, whose terms end on 31 December 2012.The five permanent Council members, which each wield the power of veto, are China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States. Non-permanent members Azerbaijan, Guatemala, Morocco, Pakistan and Togo will remain on the Council until the end of 2013.Under the UN Charter, the Council has primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security. It has 15 Members, and each Member has one vote. Under the Charter, all Member States are obligated to comply with Council decisions. In addition, the Council takes the lead in determining the existence of a threat to the peace or act of aggression. It calls upon the parties to a dispute to settle it by peaceful means and recommends methods of adjustment or terms of settlement. In some cases, it can resort to imposing sanctions or even authorize the use of force to maintain or restore international peace and security. The Council also recommends to the General Assembly the appointment of the Secretary-General and the admission of new Members to the United Nations. And, together with the General Assembly, it elects the judges of the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
The Guantánamo regime has been a serious blot on the human rights record, and reputation, of the United States for the past 14 years, High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein said in a statement.Mr. Obama presented the plan to the Congress today. According to media reports, the plan seeks the transfer of between 30 and 60 detainees to US soil, and suggests several possible locations in South Carolina, Kansas and Colorado. The rest of the 91 detainees at the prison could be sent to other countries.Noting that it has been cited by many repressive Governments as justification for their own actions, Mr. Zeid stressed that it is vital that the implementation of the plan results in no one remaining in indefinite detention without charge or trial. “All Guantánamo detainees should either be transferred to regular detention centres in the US mainland or other countries where fair trials before civilian courts and due process guarantees can be provided in accordance with international norms and standards,” he said. “If there is insufficient evidence to charge them with any crime, they must be released to their home country or to a third country if they risk persecution at home,” he added.
What his shooting gives, his defense takes away. J.J. Redick is an excellent threat from behind the arc, but his defensive efforts, while improved, are still substandard. His top 10 CARMELO comps — like teammate Jamal Crawford — are, not surprisingly, shooting specialists. Wing defense is just what the doctor ordered, and Lance Stephenson provides that. But as his slew of replacement-level CARMELO comps shows, Lance comes with costs: His penchant for over-dribbling and ill-advised shots can torpedo an offense. Read more:All our NBA player projectionsAll our 2015-16 NBA Previews Josh Smith, an inefficient scorer with a shaky reputation, seems like a Clipper from the team’s dismal past. In this respect, the Antoine Walker comp is too perfect, and too painful, for Clippers fans. But Smith does some things really well — namely, defense. Clippers fans should hold out hope that he’ll be like No. 10 comp Rasheed Wallace. Is CARMELO telling us there will be fewer dunks and more jump shots in Griffin’s future? Chris Bosh and LaMarcus Aldridge, two of Griffin’s modern comps, have made their names as stretch power forwards. It would be a shrewd move, as Griffin’s athleticism will fade with age and injuries. But more than a dunker with an emerging shot, Griffin is an underrated passer and defender, too. His top comp, Terry Cummings, perhaps forgotten by today’s young fans, was an amazing dunker: DeAndre Jordan’s change of heart about signing with the Mavericks as a free agent in July was a good turn of events for the Clippers, and for him, too. A rebounding monster and rim protector par excellence, Jordan anchors the Clips on defense. His CARMELO comps, like Dale Davis and Tyson Chandler, are stalwart dunk-and-defense guys. The Los Angeles Clippers had a busy (and weird) summer! They beefed up with veteran Paul Pierce and the tantalizingly erratic talents of Lance Stephenson and Josh Smith. And beyond the new additions, the Clips scored a dramatic coup in keeping DeAndre Jordan after he verbally agreed to sign with the Dallas Mavericks. Doc Rivers — entering his third season as head coach and second as de facto general manager — is hoping the off-season moves fixed two glaring problems that thwarted the team’s Finals ambitions last year: a paper-thin bench and a lack of wing defenders. The added depth will help, but the team will still be carried by Chris Paul and Blake Griffin. And the Clip offense will again be among the NBA’s best. Our CAMELO-based projections have the Clippers going 55-27. That’s a damn good record, but the Clips have been there, and their defense still looks mediocre. Can they break through the gauntlet of elite teams in the West? Doc Rivers reunited with Pierce, a scrappy veteran who still has a clutch outside shot, to provide depth on the wing. But The Truth is that, at 38 years old, an NBA player is entering his twilight. That said, Vince Carter (Pierce’s top CARMELO comp) wasn’t so bad last year! We’re inaugurating our NBA player projection system, CARMELO, with 2015-16 season previews for every team in the league. Check out the teams we’ve already previewed here. Learn more about CARMELO here. And here’s what to expect from the Clippers’ key players in 2015-16 (you can find every Clippers player — and the rest of the NBA — here): Chris Paul, the Clippers floor general and perennial MVP candidate, is running out of time. Having just turned 30, he may have already passed his peak. Paul’s CARMELO comps split into two camps. On one hand, Paul could have elite years well into his 30s — like John Stockton, Jason Kidd and Gary Payton. But on the other hand, his future could go the way of Mark Price and Kevin Johnson, who suffered precipitous falls at this age. This could be the inflection season for Paul. There are rumors Wesley Johnson might start at small forward. That’s odd because Johnson is — at least according to CARMELO — not good.
