(Photo by Justin K. Aller/Getty Images)Oklahoma is taking on West Virginia on Friday night with a trip to the Big 12 title game on the line. While the play on the field has been entertaining, there was a scary moment for a referee early in the action.Midway through the second quarter, West Virginia quarterback Will Grier was pushed out of bounds into a referee who was watching the sideline. Unfortunately, the referee wasn’t able to get up easily. When he finally did a few minutes later, it was revealed that he had a gash on the side of his face. His ear was also bleeding profusely. It’s unclear whether he stayed in the game, but he looked like he wanted to. Fans sometimes forget that referees are also susceptible to getting hurt as well. The score at halftime is 35-28 Oklahoma. Predictably, it’s been an offensive affair with nine touchdowns. The winner will get Texas in the Big 12 title game next week. If it’s the Sooners, they’ll get a shot at avenging their only defeat.
The Government has completed the health sector reclassification, which is to be implemented over three years, at a cost of $7 billion. This was announced by Minister without Portfolio in the Ministry of Finance and Planning (with responsibility for the Public Service), Hon. Horace Dalley, during his contribution to the 2013/14 Sectoral Debate in the House on July 2.“This exercise has been ongoing for almost ten years…The first payment under the new classification for the health sector is scheduled for this quarter,” Mr. Dalley noted. He explained that due to the complexity of the health sector, the reclassification exercise “may not be perfect,” but it will substantially streamline the occupational groupings in the health sector. There will be a Reclassification Appeals Tribunal to address anomalies, which may arise. The tribunal will have representation from the various groups within the health sector.Meanwhile, the Minister informed that Cabinet has instructed that the outstanding industrial issues of some eight other groups are to be addressed. These include: emergency duty allowance (2008 to 2010) for Government Medical Consultants; outstanding payment of allowances (2008 to 2010) for Veterinary Officers; payment of new rates (2010 to 2011) for West Indies Group of University Teachers (settled); realignment issues (2007 to 2011) for Education Officers (settled); relativity study between security groups for fire-fighters (payment programmed); relativity study between security groups for Correctional Officers (payment programmed); adjustment to duty rates (2008 to 2010) for Medical Doctors (payment programmed); and the delinking of salaries for legal officers from High Court Judges’ salaries(in Court).“You cannot engender trust among your employees when you have signed Heads of Agreements, and court rulings and IDT awards are left on the table to languish, because there is no respect for the sanctity of contracts and collective bargaining agreements,” he stated.Mr. Dalley said this is in conflict with good industrial relations practice. “This administration will not behave in such a manner, so we will settle these outstanding issues and ensure that there is no repeat of this type of behaviour on the part of the government of Jamaica,” the Minister said.Contact: Alphea Saunders

This year, we have set a target of distributing 25,000 electric wheels,” KVIC Chairman Vinai Kumar Saxena told PTI.Under the Kumhar Sashaktikaran Yojana, the government has been distributing electric wheels to potters to increase their productivity. In 2004, then railway minister Lalu Prasad Yadav had introduced ‘kulhads’ to boost the pottery industry and also give passengers a taste of eco-friendly cups. He had made it clear that hot beverages should be served only in ‘kulhads’.
NANAIMO, B.C. — British Columbia conservation officers say two piranhas found in a Vancouver Island lake were likely unwanted pets. One red-bellied piranha was reeled in by an angler at Westwood Lake in Nanaimo last week.Another was caught in the same lake during the summer. The provincial Conservation Officer Service says in a Facebook post that the tropical fish with sharp teeth can’t survive winter climates. The service says introducing aquatic invasive species can have harmful impacts, including threatening native fish, ecosystems and other species. It adds that it’s illegal and a conviction for a first offence could result in a fine of up to $100,000 and a prison term of up to one year. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Sept. 30, 2019.The Canadian Press
Fez – A Moroccan boy born without a face, is being saved by the intervention of a Moroccan living in Australia.Yahya, a little three year old boy, born near Tangier, was the main topic of an Australian TV show that was aired on Sunday. The child was born without eyes, nose and upper jaw because without the bones in his face, they were not able to merge whilst he was still in his mother’s womb. Yahya’s father, Mustapha Zohra, who was desperate to find a solution for his son, consulted several surgeons who refused to operate him. Fortunately for him, the story of Yahya spread on social networks and attracted the attention of a Moroccan citizen living in Australia, Fatima Baraka.“I opened my Facebook one day […] and I saw an image that really caught my attention,” Baraka said to the Australian Seven TV channel. While she was fighting breast cancer, Baraka contacted parents of Yahya and pledged to find a surgeon able to restore the boy’s face. Now, thanks to the efforts made by Fatima Baraka, Yahya will be operated by Melbourne reconstructive surgeon Tony Holmes. The Australian surgeon, who met Yahya for the first time in August to assess his case, expressed his concern over the chances for the operation to succeed, adding that his case is extreme.“My biggest concern is whether or not he is suitable for surgery, we really do not know how he is functioning and how the brain is functioning,” he said.“I think this one is about as difficult as it gets, on the you know, this is a 9-9.50 out of 10 degree of difficulty without any doubt I mean this is cranio-facial neurosurgery at its extreme,” he added.Holmes told the Australian TV channel that Yahya’s necessitates many surgeries and hoped he would complete the first surgery by the end of this year. Thanks to the efforts made by Moroccan women and the Australian surgeon, Yahya may be able to lead a normal life and have a bright future.

The roller-coaster ride that is football player Santonio Holmes’ career made perhaps its most abrupt turn Tuesday. A day after playing his first game for his new team following a four-game suspension for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy, a former agent accused Holmes of accepting money during his playing days at Ohio State. Josh Luchs told Sports Illustrated that he offered Holmes money but was rebuffed by the then-Buckeye wide receiver, who was already being paid by another agent. In a phone interview with The Lantern, Luchs said he wasn’t the first to contact Holmes while the receiver was at OSU. “That wasn’t a typical situation. I was basically shut down immediately with the response being that he was basically getting taken care of by somebody else,” said Luchs, who also represented former OSU running back Maurice Clarett. “So I just took it as I was too late for the dance. But, obviously, as I progressed on, I wasn’t going to participate in that stuff anymore.” Luchs said he appreciated Holmes’ being forthright about taking money from another agent. “You know what, I applaud Santonio for being straight-up and being forthright with me when I got there and not making me go through my song and dance and wasting my time,” Luchs said. “I wish more players were that honest with what they were doing, and I applaud him for it.” Through a New York Jets spokesperson, Holmes denied that he ever told Luchs he was receiving money from an agent while in college, SI reported. “He denied it. That’s fine,” Luchs said. “I mean, what is he going to say? Plenty of people deny things that are true. It doesn’t matter. I still appreciate his honesty one-on-one when it mattered. It doesn’t matter what’s said publicly.” The OSU athletic department was still investigating as of Tuesday night. “We just learned of the article,” OSU spokesman Dan Wallenberg said in an e-mail. “Our compliance staff is in the process of gathering information.”
Grande’s music label, Universal Media Group said: “We are deeply saddened to learn of tonight’s devastating event in Manchester. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by this tragedy.”Witnesses reported hearing two loud bangs coming from near the arena’s bars at about 10.35 p.m. “A huge bomb-like bang went off that hugely panicked everyone and we were all trying to flee the arena,” concertgoer Majid Khan, 22, told the Press Association. “It was one bang, and essentially everyone from the other side of the arena where the bang was heard from suddenly came running towards us as they were trying to exit.” Prime Minister Theresa May suspended election campaigning and said the Government is working to establish “the full details of what is being treated by the police as an appalling terrorist attack.”She said her thoughts are with the victims and the families of those who have been affected. The government is expected to call an emergency Cabinet meeting. The incident is the most deadly terrorist incident in Britain since the London Underground bombings of July 7 2005.Police advised the public to avoid the area around the Manchester Arena, and the train station near the arena, Victoria Station, was evacuated and all trains canceled. Another concert-goer, Catherine Macfarlane, told Reuters: “We were making our way out and, when we were right by the door, there was a massive explosion and everybody was screaming.””It was a huge explosion – you could feel it in your chest. It was chaotic. Everybody was running and screaming and just trying to get out.”Manchester Arena, the largest indoor arena in Europe, opened in 1995 and has a capacity for 21,000 people, according to its website. It is a popular concert and sporting venue.Video from inside the arena showed concertgoers screaming as they made their way out amid a sea of pink balloons. US pop star Ariana Grande has said she is “broken” following the deadly terror attack on her concert at Manchester Arena, adding: “From the bottom of my heart, I am so so sorry.”The tweet came around five hours following an explosion that killed at least 22 people, including children, and injured more than 50 others. Police believe a lone suicide bomber was behind the atrocity.Earlier, a representative for Grande said in the immediate aftermath she was “Okay”, Variety reported.Miss Grande, a 23-year-old born in Florida, had already performed at concerts in Birmingham and Dublin as part of her European tour, and was due to make two appearances at London’s O2 venue on Thursday and Friday. Britain is on its second-highest alert level of “severe” meaning an attack by militants is considered highly likely. Atletico Madrid had to win today’s game in Palacio Vistalegre if they wanted to keep the champions race for the ASOBAL tight, but failing to do so, they are now trailing behind Barcelona by three points. The last week draw against Aragon and now defeated by Barcelona means that Barcelona is very close to defending the title in Spain, since they already won in Madrid and being undefeated so far means they’re having the upper hand in the title fight.Barcelona were indeed the better team taking the lead early and keeping all the time, despite some attempts by Atletico to get close and try an equalizer, Barcelona played well and fended off well their lead. Kallman was Atletico Madrid‘s best player scoring five goals, same amount of goals scored by Markussen. Raul Entrerrios was superb for FCB scoring 8 goals from 9 attempts (89%), while Arpad Sterbik was really unsolvable enigma for some of Atletico’s players saving 17 shots from 39 (44%). ← Previous Story Bundesliga (Round 15): Brave MT Melsungen win 29-25 in Kiel against THW! Central Bank says 35-45 year olds who bought homes in the boom will be most impacted if tracker rates rise Despite Brexit, the Central Bank believes workers are in line for pay increases of up to 7% over the next two years. https://jrnl.ie/4516104 By Christina Finn Tweet thisShare on FacebookEmail this article Feb 27th 2019, 4:57 PM Combined with expectations of modest inflation, he said it should translate into “higher real incomes and purchasing power for households”.The Central Bank is forecasting the average increase per employee to increase from 2.8 % last year to 3.4% this year and 3.6% in 2020.He added that the country is seeing a very high rate in job vacancies, as well as job switching. Speaking about the labour market, Cassidy said the unemployment rate is projected to drop from an average of 5.8% last year to 4.9% this year. It is expected to hit 4.7 per % in 2020. Wednesday 27 Feb 2019, 4:57 PM Share5 Tweet Email2 Cassidy told the committee today that as the country heads towards full employment “a further pick-up in wages” is expected. Short URL Image: Shutterstock/wavebreakmedia THOSE AGED BETWEEN 35 and 45, who bought their homes at the peak before the recession, will be the most impacted group of society if mortgage interest rates rise.Mark Cassidy, Director of Economics and Statistics for the Central Bank of Ireland said this group of people who bought prior to the recession, are one of the most indebted and the “most vulnerable” to any income, house price or interest rate shocks.Speaking to the Oireachtas Budgetry Oversight Committee today on on economic and fiscal risks, particularly in light of Brexit, Cassidy said while variable mortgage interest rates are higher than in many other EU countries, there is a high number of this vulnerable group on tracker mortgages. The tracker mortgage rate has stayed relatively low, he said, as it is linked to the European Central Bank rate.Cassidy said those that bought before the crisis have been largely “protected” due to the affordability of the tracker rate. However, he added that once the tracker rate increases “that cohort will see an increase in their payments” adding that there is a “potential financial risk there”.While most are paying down their debt, he said the 35-45 age group of homeowners who bought at the peak of house prices in the boom “are highly indebted” and when tracker rates increase “will find themselves more stretched”.Pay rises Despite Brexit, the Central Bank believes workers are in line for pay increases of up to 7% over the next two years. Brexit Discussing the risks of Brexit on the Irish economy, he said a disorderly Brexit and the breakdown in some of the trade and customs arrangements would be immediately damaging to trade and the “functioning of supply chains for production, distribution and retailing”.“It is clear that a ‘no deal’ scenario would have very severe and immediate disruptiveeffects, which would permeate almost all areas of economic activity. Certain sectors and regions would be disproportionately affected, particularly agriculture and food sectors as well as border regions and other rural regions with a heavy reliance on agriculture and a particular reliance on the UK as an export market,” said Cassidy. “We estimate that a disorderly Brexit could reduce the growth rate of the Irish economy by up to four percentage points in the first year,” added the Central Bank official. 37,356 Views As the clock ticks down, get all the best Brexit news and analysis in your inbox: Image: Shutterstock/wavebreakmedia 26 Comments
Former Greek Prime Minister Konstantinos Mitsotakis has died at age 99 the Associated Press reports. His family has released a short statement announcing the former PM’s passing, saying he died at 1 am on Monday morning “surrounded by those whom he loved and who loved him”.Mr Mitsotakis had been active in politics for almost 60 years, having served in several Cabinet posts, including finance minister and foreign minister before retiring as a lawmaker in 2004.He led Greece’s conservative party, New Democracy, from 1984 to 1993 and served as prime minister from 1990 to 1993.History:Mitsotakis’ father and grandfathers were also members of parliament, and the great liberal leader Eleutherios Venizelos was his uncle. As a young man he took part in the Cretan resistance against the German occupation. He graduated in law and economics from the University of Athens and was elected to the Greek Parliament in 1946.Mitsotakis was a traditional Greek liberal, and a member of George Papandreou’s Centre Union party. In 1965 he led the group of dissidents known as the “July apostates” who left the party which caused the Center Union to lose its majority and the government to fall, leading to the junta of 1967 in which he and a number of other politicians were arrested. He left Greece and lived in exile until 1974 when the dictatorship fell. In the first elections he failed to get elected but in 1977 was elected in the Party of New Liberals. In 1978 he joined Karmanlis’ New Democracy party and served as Minister for Economic Coordination and Minister of Foreign Affairs. After the rise of Andrea’s Papandreou’s PASOK party and the defeat of New Democracy, Mitsotakis was chosen to lead New Democracy. When his party finally won the election in 1989, Papandreou had already changed the rules of the Constitution which made it impossible for a party to govern without a majority. Unable to form a viable coalition new elections are held and New Democracy won a small majority. In 1992 Antonios Samaras and several members of New Democracy left the party over the handling of the ‘Macedonia’ – FYROM name issue causing the collapse of the Mitsotakis government, the same way George Papandreou’s government had collapsed thirty years before. Mitsotakis then resigned from the ND leadership, although he remained the party’s honorary chairman. His son Kyriakos Mitsotakis was elected President of the New Democracy party on 10 January 2016 and is now the main opposition leader.Mitsotakis’ elder daughter, Dora Bakoyanni, has served as Minister of Culture and Foreign Affairs and has also been elected Mayor of Athens. I feel like the base…or the most important piece of the puzzle, that is what made me stay.”Barcelona were keen to pay Griezmann’s €100 million release clause and bring him to the Camp Nou. Additionally, the delivery personnel will only leave the vehicle after it has been re-locked and Amazon doesn’t have access to customers’ OnStar or Volvo On Call login details. For Andrew Whinston, a professor who teaches at the University of Texas at Austin’s McCombs School of Business and specializes in electronic commerce, Amazon’s new service proves the company is going in “new directions.”Whinston thinks that the new service can be an alternative for customers who are reluctant about Amazon’s home delivery. “You could avoid having the delivery within your house. I mean, you’re always thinking about the house as something more private than your car.”Moreover, Whinston said the new service is surely appealing for millenials because they are used to using this kind of technology, but also to other “groups of people,” such as old people who “may be a little more comfortable having somebody put it in the car and then they go out and get it.”Austin and Dallas are other Texas cities where the new service is available.
New Zoosh technology provides NFC capabilities without the chip Citation: Microsoft India team develop secure Peer-to-Peer acoustic NFC system (2013, August 16) retrieved 18 August 2019 from https://phys.org/news/2013-08-microsoft-india-team-peer-to-peer-acoustic.html Standard NFC communications, based on RFID, allow two devices to communicate with one another without having to access a network. Despite a lot of press coverage (and hardware to support it becoming standard in a lot of phones) NFC has failed to take off—for it to succeed other vendors, such as grocery stores, would need to add hardware to their existing equipment. To get around this problem, the engineers in India have done away with the need for additional hardware choosing instead to take advantage of the acoustic abilities inherent in virtually any smartphone (including the iPhone). It works on roughly the same principle as old-school modems, which means it uses beeps, squeaks, squawks and other noises to send and receive data.Dhwani is slow by any measure with a data rate of just 2.4 Kbps. For that reason, no one is going to be using it to send pictures or video, instead, it’s meant to send data such as that used for digital wallet transactions. The development team says it’s more secure than RFID based NFC communications as well because it’s based on a Jam-Secure technique—where it sends self-jamming noise along with self-cancelation to avoid eavesdropping—anyone else listening in would hear only chaotic noise. To use the new system, two phone users download the software, run it, then place their phones together where the speaker for one is next to the microphone of the other (its range is approximately 10 centimeters). The developers claim that ambient noise won’t pose a problem for the exchange, thus paving the way for its use in virtually any environment where people use their phones.Of course for the system to work, other vendors must write apps for it to allow the two phones, or phone and other equipment to carry out proprietary transactions. Whether that will happen or not, is still unclear, but if it does, the new software could be a game-changer. This document is subject to copyright. Prior to working at Equator, Vinci was President and Enterprise Architect at RedWire IT, SVP of Professional Services at Lydian Technology Group, and SVP of Professional Services at WellFound Decade Corp. He is a graduate of Columbia University.Vinci recently spoke to MReport about how the industry can best adapt to and incorporate evolving technology.M // What is the biggest obstacle for mortgage professionals when it comes to incorporating technology?Vinci // The adoption rate is actually pretty good in the mortgage industry, however where it gets complicated is the blur between enterprise software and personal software.Everyone’s using their phone. They’re familiar with how intuitive apps are. It is important that those user-friendly best practices continue to get pushed down into enterprise software so technology can be easier to use and adapt. I often ask my staff, “Did you take a class on how to use your iPhone or your Galaxy Note?” No, but we expect our customers to take classes on how to use our software. Enterprise technology needs to be more intuitive. It needs to be easier to use and more focused on what the user is trying to do. I think the obstacle for mortgage professionals is the lack of easy-to-use software.M // What other changes do you see coming down the pipeline with technology in the industry?Vinci // There’s a lot going on right now, the hot topics in our space are definitely big data and data analytics, blockchain, machine learning, and robotic process automation (RPA).We have to be a more data-focused industry and while we’ve made many strides over the years, there are still those who choose to go in opposite directions from what the data’s telling us—and data proves to be right more often than not. Collecting data, understanding data, and then utilizing the data is critical. Blockchain technology has a lot of opportunity in our industry. One use case that I think will see early adoption is the ability to ensure immutable data and documents. It solves a lot of issues we deal with every day. An easy example is a short sale decline, it is critical to preserving actionable data (e.g. the valuation, offer data, etc) blockchain offers us this ability, ensuring that there was no manipulation of that data behind the scenes, accidental or not. I think we’re going to see some very interesting developments in the blockchain space that will change the way many of us do business. You have to be judicial in your technology selection process. Do due diligence, make sure that you’re finding the right technology for the right problem and not just a technology that’s very popular.
