Blackwater import Henry Walker against three Phoenix defenders. PBA IMAGESReturning import Henry Walker and Mike DiGregorio teamed up to lead Blackwater to its first win at the expense of Phoenix, 92-86, in the 2017 PBA Governors’ Cup Sunday at Smart Araneta Coliseum.Walker, who is in his third tour of duty in the league after playing for Alaska in 2014 and NLEX last year, battled through cramps in the fourth quarter to post 32 points and 15 rebounds while DiGregorio came up big with a career-high 28 points.ADVERTISEMENT “Finally, we’re able to get the win. Special thanks to our new import Henry Walker,” said Blackwater head coach Leo Isaac, whose squad improved to 1-3.“Going into the ninth minute of the fourth quarter he was complaining of cramps and he was challenging his teammates to be on the top of the situation. But still, he was able to hit shots and grabbed rebounds and we’re very happy that we have an import like Walker,” Isaac said.FEATURED STORIESSPORTSSEA Games: Biñan football stadium stands out in preparedness, completionSPORTSPrivate companies step in to help SEA Games hostingSPORTSWin or don’t eat: the Philippines’ poverty-driven, world-beating pool starsThe two combined for 24 of their team’s 26 points in the final frame with Walker scoring the Elite’s last eight points in the final two minutes and 24 seconds.Blackwater put the clamps down on Phoenix’s explosive import Eugene Phelps, who scored just 13 points on 5-of-13 shooting from the field, in 40 minutes. Before this, they had reached the semi-finals once Mexico 1986. They had lost the third-place playoff match to France 4-2 via penalties that day.advertisementSince then, they were knocked out in the round-of-16 in 1990 and 2002 World Cups and failed to qualify from the group stages in 1994 and 1998. In 2014, they reached the quarter-finals, where they lost to eventual finalists Argentina 1-0 at the Estadio Nacional Mane Garrincha. In the last four years, the team has improved leaps and bounds and stormed their way into the finals this year in Russia. Belgium topped Group G after beating Tunisia, Panama and England. They defeated Japan and Brazil in the round-of-16 and quarter-finals respectively to reach their first semi-final in 22 years. In the semis, their unbeaten run in this year’s tournament came to an end as France edged past the Belgians 1-0 to reach the final. However, they came back strong and won the third-place playoff with ease and finished their best-ever finish in a World Cup. They became the 20th different nation to finish within the top three at the World Cup. They also become the fourth side to win six games at a World Cup but not lift the Trophy (penalty shootouts counted as draws) – after Poland (1974, third), Italy (1990, third) and Netherlands (2010, runners-up). Australia vs India, 1st ODIFull Scorecard MS Dhoni hit his first half-century in 13 months as India continued to fight in the first ODI of a three-match series against Australia in Sydney. Playing his 50th ODI against Australia, Dhoni walked out to bat when India were in deep trouble at 4 for 3 before stitching up a crucial partnership with Rohit Sharma for the fourth wicket.Dhoni had a poor run in 2018 when he scored only 275 runs with a best of 42 not out against South Africa in Johannesburg on February 10. Despite a sensational time in the 2018 IPL, MS Dhoni struggled in international cricket and was even booed during the second ODI against England at Lord’s where he ploughed his way to 42 in a steep chase.Dhoni now has 68 half-centuries from 333 ODIs. On Saturday, he also became the fifth batsman to score 10,000 ODI runs for India when he got off the mark with a single.Dhoni was out for 51 off 96 balls when Behrendorff trapped him LBW with a fuller delivery on the stumps.India are out of reviews and Dhoni has to go… #CloseMatters#AUSvIND | @GilletteAU pic.twitter.com/WRYVQPxwIMcricket.com.au (@cricketcomau) January 12, 2019India vs Australia 1st ODI in Sydney – Live ScoreExperts have called for MS Dhoni to play first-class cricket to regain his form ahead of the World Cup but the World Cup-winning captain has stayed away from domestic cricket. Sunil Gavaskar had told India Today he expected Dhoni to work singles, twos and threes on the large-sized ground and that is exactly what he did. MS Dhoni waited for his chances and was unfazed even as the asking rate climbed up.This knock must bring a sigh of relief for MS Dhoni, who had last scored a half-century against Sri Lanka on December 10, 2017. Rafael Nadal pulled away in what had suddenly become a tight final to beat Dominic Thiem 6-3, 5-7, 6-1, 6-1 Sunday for his record-extending 12th French Open championship. It raises Nadal’s Grand Slam title count to 18, within two of Roger Federer’s record for a man.The 33-year-old Spaniard improved to 93-2 at Roland Garros, including a combined 24-0 in semifinals and finals. This was a rematch of last year’s final, which Nadal won in straight sets against Thiem, a 25-year-old Austrian who beat No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the semifinals and was seeking his first major trophy.Thiem made it seem as if this one could be much more difficult for Nadal, taking the second set to make it one set apiece. But the No. 2-seeded Nadal reasserted himself there to grab control. He won 16 of the initial 17 points in the third set en route to collecting 12 of the last 14 games. No other man or woman has won as many as 12 titles at any of the four Grand Slam tournaments. When it ended, Nadal dropped to his back on the clay he loves so much, then covered his face with both hands. Also Watch:

Feeling stressed out? Take this newly discovered home-test that can easily measure your stress level and tell you whether you need to consult a doctor or not. The researchers have conducted a new test with a device that uses ultra-violet light to measure common stress hormones using sweat, blood, urine or saliva. “This may not give you all the information, but it tells you whether you need a professional who can take over,” said Andrew Steckl, Professor at the varsity. Also Read – Pollution makes you more aggressiveThe research, published in American Chemical Society Sensors journal, showed that the device measures stress biomarkers in our blood, sweat, urine or saliva. “It measures not just one biomarker but multiple biomarkers. And it can be applied to different bodily fluids. That’s what’s unique,” Steckl said. The researchers, however, maintained that the test is not an alternative for laboratory tests. “This doesn’t replace laboratory tests, but it could tell patients more or less where they are… If you’re able to do the test at home because you’re not feeling well and want to know where you stand, this will tell whether your condition has changed a little or a lot.” Steckl noted. Stress is linked to several physical ailments such as diabetes, high blood pressure and neurological or psychological disorders. Understanding how stress affects you individually could be extremely valuable, the researchers said. “This test has the potential to make a strong commercial device. It would be great to see the research go in that direction,” said the researchers.
New Delhi: Congress leader Shashi Tharoor and Pakistani journalist Meher Tarar spent three nights together in Dubai, the prosecution told a Delhi court on Saturday citing the statement of Sunanda Pushkar’s journalist friend. Public Prosecutor Atul Srivastava read out the statement of journalist Nalini Singh, who was the friend of the deceased. The statement said: “I knew Sunanda for 3-4 years. New Delhi: People this time will vote for Delhi’s full statehood as not having the status is directly linked with concrete issues such as unemployment, women’s safety and lack of opportunities in higher education, AAP leader Atishi has said. Atishi is one of the seven candidates fielded by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for the Lok Sabha elections in Delhi. The AAP is contesting the elections with the slogan ‘Poorna Rajya Banao Jhadu ka Button Dabao’, telling people that Delhi will get full statehood if they vote for the party. Also Read – After eight years, businessman arrested for kidnap & murder In an interview to PTI, the Aam Aadmi Party’s Lok Sabha candidate for the East Delhi constituency said the party is “talking of concrete issues of lack of safety and security, cleanliness and employment that is linked to Delhi not having full statehood”. “People in Delhi this election are going to vote on these factors,” Atishi said. Noting that there is “no narrative” this election and people would vote based on local issues affecting them, she said, “Like in 2014, there was ‘Abki Baar Modi Sarkar’, in 2015, there was narrative to make Kejriwal as the chief minister but if you see in this election there is no narrative across the nation either in favour of anyone or against anyone”. Also Read – Two brothers held for snatchings She added that a lot of people who voted for the BJP in 2014 were “not natural BJP voters” but the ones hoping for change in favour of development. “When they voted for the BJP (in 2014), they thought it is on the agenda of development. They were also the elections that had mega narratives,” she said. “I think people would say we have seen consequences of voting for Modi, nothing changed in our lives. Our children still don’t have education, they don’t have jobs, women are still not safe. Now they will vote based on seeing the work that we (AAP) have done after coming to power,” the 37-year-old Oxford graduate said. On reforms in government school education in Delhi, Atishi said when the AAP came to power, there were multiple gaps that had to be dealt with. “One was that of the basic infrastructure, whatever infrastructure was there was poorly maintained. There were some schools in east Delhi having over 150 students in one class and with such infrastructure deficiency there is no way you can provide high quality education,” she said. “I think all this shortage of infrastructure gave this message to the children that you are second class citizens and you don’t matter in this world and you are not going to make it anywhere,” Atishi said. The second major challenge was “lack of accountability” which, she claimed, is a “hallmark of a government system”. “I think changing that mindset was the biggest challenge. Everyone in this system used to believe that this system couldn’t work,” she said. “Teachers are same, schools are same, children are same but the fact that you have a government in power that is willing to improve, an intent to improve and that changed things,” she said. But she noted that Delhi’s higher education is still facing a crisis. “You have 2.5 lakh students passing out of class 12 every year in Delhi and that number is increasing. There are only one lakh seats in higher educational institutes for which children from across the country are seeking admission. So there is definitely a crisis,” she said. “Most of the children passing out of Delhi government schools do their undergraduation through correspondence and there are 28 colleges that are funded by the city government so at least 85 per cent seats should be reserved for children in Delhi as it is being run by their tax payers’ money,” she said. She lamented that the Centre opposes such a reservation in the universities in Delhi for local students but at the same time prohibits opening of new universities according to the Delhi University Act. “So where will the children of Delhi go,” she asked. “Once Delhi gets full statehood, this is a very big issue that would be solved. We would be able to give 85 per cent reservation to Delhiites in these colleges,” she said. She exuded confidence that the status, once granted to Delhi, will help expand higher education under the AAP dispensation. Atishi said women’s safety in the national capital is also one of the biggest agenda for this election. “We have shown that we can make government systems work. With full statehood, a transformation can also happen in the police system where there is a lack of accountability and complete statehood would bring that accountability,” she said.
NATO assumed command of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan on 11 August. A pair of recent letters from NATO Secretary-General Lord Robertson to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan outlines in broad terms the long-range strategy for the forces in Afghanistan, including the expansion of troop movements outside the Kabul area.”The expansion of the ISAF mission would strengthen the ability of the Afghan Transitional Authority (ATA) to provide a secure environment for its people. Such expansion would be subject to the adoption of a United Nations Security Council resolution providing appropriate authority and the identification and provision of appropriate assets,” a letter dated 6 October said. The Security Council did not immediately schedule a meeting on the subject.
by News Staff Posted Jul 29, 2012 6:00 am MDT TORONTO – Traders will be looking at central banks in the United States and Europe for action to bolster the American economic recovery and find a fix once and for all for the eurozone debt crisis.Markets found lift late last week after European Central Bank president Mario Draghi vowed that the ECB would do whatever is necessary to protect the euro currency union.Traders were further encouraged after German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande released a joint statement saying they will do anything they can to stop the 17 countries that use the euro from breaking up. They didn’t offer details. And the Wall Street Journal reported mid-week that the Fed was set to move to take new steps to spur economic activity. The ECB’s Mario Draghi suggested that the central bank could intervene in markets to lower the borrowing rates of financially weak countries like Spain.Markets had been depressed in recent weeks while the debt crisis settled on Spain with the country mired in recession and high unemployment while banks are stuck with billions of euros in bad loans resulting from a collapsed real estate sector. The government has been forced to pay ever higher yields to service its debt with yields spiking above 7.5 per cent, a level considered unsustainable in the long run, prior to Draghi’s announcement.“The (ECB) has been on the sidelines for a number of months, putting pressure on governments to fix their financial situation to find some political measures to (fix) unproductive economies in Spain and Italy,” said Patrick Blais, managing director and portfolio manager at MFC Global Investment Management.“But they reached a point where they have to step back, yields are too high, they’re unsustainable, and come back into the market and provide at the very least a floor or some support to the markets and bond markets especially and the possibility of refinancing is critical at this point.”However, markets have been told repeatedly over the last two years by European officials that a fix to the crisis was at hand, only to be disappointed at a lack of details.Traders will be counting on the ECB to flesh out Draghi’s commitment with details when the bank holds its next meeting on Thursday.Meanwhile, hopes are high that the U.S. Federal Reserve will indicate it’s ready to embark on another round of stimulus to support a weakening economy. The latest sign of weakness showed up Friday when the U.S. Commerce Department reported that economic growth slowed during the second quarter to its lowest pace in a year. Gross domestic product rose 1.5 per cent, which was roughly in line with expectations. That’s down from a revised two per cent gain in the first quarter.Another sign of a slowing economy has been job creation, which last month came in at just 80,000. Expectations for July job creation are similarly modest at 100,000.“This is an economy which is still largely driven by consumer spending so exports aren’t going to necessarily step up to a great degree and carry the burden of growth”, said David Watt, chief economist for HSBC Bank Canada.“So if you don’t have jobs, you’re going to struggle to have consumer spending. So the fed looks at this to say, look, there is a potential that this could become a structural issue that could weigh on growth, so they probably need to do more.”Some analysts say the Fed would want to wait longer in order to assess the strength of the economy, but Watt disagreed.“I would be more convinced if jobs were like 150,000 or even 120,000 on average but they’re slipping back,” he said.“The job market at that pace is not going to draw people back into the labour market. That’s not going to start cutting the average duration of unemployment. You still got an average length of unemployment of about 40 weeks. I mean, that’s absolutely astonishing. You have to cut it in half to even get back to what used to be the worst during recessions.”There have been suggestions that the Fed could embark on another round of stimulus known as quantitative easing, which involves the central bank printing more money to buy up bonds. But Watt said that the Fed has other levers it can pull.“When they’re in a situation like this, and they’re not meeting their mandate (for full employment), they have to do something,” he said.“I’m sure they will come up with some creative measure to do it and some could very well dip into being de facto fiscal policy. And I’m sure that a number of people will be upset the Fed is going far beyond traditional monetary policy levers in order to take these actions.” AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to TwitterTwitterShare to FacebookFacebookShare to RedditRedditShare to 電子郵件Email Investors look to central banks for action to keep economic recovery on track
FILE – In this Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2005, file photo, travelers make their way into Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport. In-flight catalog SkyMall has filed for bankruptcy, according to reports, Friday, Jan. 23, 2015. (AP Photo/Jeff Roberson, File) NEW YORK, N.Y. – Apparently, airline passengers aren’t buying enough garden gnomes, superhero pyjamas and heated cat shelters. SkyMall has filed for bankruptcy. The quirky in-flight shopping catalogue has been a mainstay on airlines since 1989. Passengers with nowhere to go would pull it from the seatback and flip through the pages. While flying high over Iowa, they could dream about owning a $16,000 multisensory home sauna or maybe just a grill spatula with a built-in flashlight for $29.95.But in recent years, passengers have found other distractions. More planes have seatback TV screens. The federal government now allows us to keep Kindles and iPads on during the entire flight. And most jets in the U.S. now have Wi-Fi meaning passengers can chat with friends back home or actually do work.“Nobody’s bored anymore. They don’t have a captive audience,” says John DiScala, who runs the travel advice site JohnnyJet.com “Not only is it full of germs but travellers today have all the information they need at their fingertips.”So Thursday, SkyMall’s parent company, Phoenix, Arizona-based Xhibit Corp., filed for Chapter 11 protection in U.S. bankruptcy court. In the filing, the company said it has $1 million to $10 million in assets but $10 million to $50 million in liabilities. Its biggest creditors are airlines. The company owes American Airlines $1.6 million, Delta Air Lines $1.5 million, Southwest Airlines $400,000 and United Airlines $300,000. It also has debts with UPS, specialty retailer Hammacher Schlemmer and American Express.“Given how much of a joke SkyMall is among travellers, I’m not surprised,” says Matt Kepnes, author of “How to Travel the World on $50 a Day” and other travel books. “I don’t know anybody who has ever purchased anything from them.”In a statement Friday, SkyMall’s acting chief executive officer, Scott Wiley, said that on Jan. 9 the company hired bankers to pursue a possible sale. A week later, SkyMall suspended its catalogue business and laid off 47 workers, most of them call centre employees.SkyMall hopes to complete a sale by April. But Wiley also said creditors are prepared to shut down the company if necessary. If it survives, SkyMall must find a way to stay relevant to passengers who are no longer a captive audience. It will also need to convince airlines to keep filling their planes with the magazine. Fewer airline seats now have seatback pockets to hold a magazine. And airlines are much more aware of the added fuel cost for carrying the heavy publication — a recent holiday version had 170 pages.Delta stopped carrying the magazine in November.Over the years, SkyMall has taken on a cult-like following. Travel news website Gadling, for instance, used to have a SkyMall Monday feature, highlighting some of the more unusual items for sale.If the magazine were to shut down, there’s nothing else to fill that niche. The beauty of SkyMall — after all — is that it highlights items passenger never thought they needed. Now, the Buckeyes have to find some way to keep the gears spinning coming off a second bye week just five games into the season. After players spent their weekend off either with friends, family, coaches or even out of the country, coach Urban Meyer said it will be important to find a way to keep the team rolling.“We have to restake that momentum,” Meyer said Monday. “This is a little bit uncharted waters for myself to have this many bye weeks early in the season. We got to get ready to go.”OSU’s first week off came after a 66-0 trampling of Kent State at home on Sept. 13. The Buckeyes followed that break with another win against Cincinnati before topping the Terrapins.Meyer said the team has a “standard operating procedure” for how game weeks are run, but he added he’ll meet with the team to discuss how to keep the momentum coming out of a week off.“I’m going to talk to them like grown men, say this is where we’re at, this is what we have to do,” he said. “You’ve had three days off, let’s pick up and go.”Even before the weekend off, the Buckeyes had a lighter week of practice than normal, senior linebacker Curtis Grant said, but that doesn’t mean the team slacked off.“We had a great practice for those last three days, it was very intense,” Grant said Monday. “But coach Meyer gave us a little bit of leeway. He didn’t really kill us last week. So we’ll be ready for this week.”While the offense continued a successful run of games against Maryland, the Buckeyes entered the bye week coming off one of their best defensive performances of the season. Grant and the rest of the OSU defense held the Terrapins to just 66 yards rushing and 310 yards total, coming out to an average of 4.8 yards per play.Redshirt-sophomore safety Tyvis Powell said having an extra week off after a strong performance can have one of two outcomes — one good and one bad.“They way I see it could be good is if we basically pick up where we left off, we get that momentum going, it’s good to keep it going and keep playing and progressing,” he said Monday. “But if we come back this week and be lackadaisical because we had a week off, then I could see where it could be bad.”Powell went on to say he expects the good possibility to be the outcome for the Buckeyes as they set their sights on another Big Ten game this weekend.Even though it could stunt momentum, there could still be positives of having an extra week off during the season.Junior offensive lineman Taylor Decker said the bye week was a chance to work on getting healthy, but added he could’ve done with a little bit less time off.“It’s nice to get some rest on the bye week and get your body back, start feeling a little better than you have,” he said Monday. “But then you see the other teams playing and it’s fun being out there. Definitely better than sitting at home.”While the Buckeyes did practice a few times during the week, a weekend off gave the players a chance to do things along the lines of sitting at home and watching football for a change, instead of playing it.Powell said he spent most of his Saturday watching football, and did it away from anyone else from the program.“Everybody went they own separate ways,” he said. But some players still made sure to stay close to teammates — at least partially — over the weekend. Senior wide receiver Evan Spencer said he and others from his position group spent Saturday watching football at wide receivers coach Zach Smith’s house.“It’s always good to just watch some football, because that’s what I’ve done my whole life,” Spencer said.He still found some time for personal life, though, as he said his “girlfriend kind of took over my weekend.”“I met with her, met her brother, and brother’s wife and son, then we went out to one of her friend’s house, so it was an eventful weekend,” he said. But not every player on the team even felt the need to go back home or spend time at a coach’s residence.Take senior tight end Jeff Heuerman for example: “How’d I spend my bye week? Went to Mexico.”The Buckeyes are scheduled to return to the field on Saturday to face Rutgers at Ohio Stadium. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m.
Ubisoft took the wraps off the newest iteration in the Far Cry series of games at E3 last night. Far Cry 3 will land for the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 in 2012, and will shed a little of the character selection elements from Far Cry 2 but retail the open-world and player-dictated storyline that fans of Far Cry 2 will remember. The game puts you in the shoes of Jason Brody, a man stranded on a distant tropical island armed with his wits and whatever he can find to try and make sense of what’s going on around him. As you play the game, the reasons why you land on this island and what secrets it holds become clear, along with why the island is empty aside from groups of bloodthirsty pirates and mercenaries who are all armed to the teeth. If this sounds like a return to the original Far Cry, it should: the story is a bit reminiscent of the original Far Cry title, complete with beautiful tropical vistas, just perhaps missing the genetic experiments and mutants.AdChoices广告Ubisoft wants to retain some of the best features from Far Cry 2 as well though – players will still get to decide who they’re friends with and which enemies they make along the way. They want the game to be accessible to players who have never played a Far Cry game before as well, so expect a clean break between storylines. The official Far Cry 3 page doesn’t have much on it at the moment aside from some promo art for the game and links to follow the game’s progress on Facebook and Twitter. You can also hop in the forums to chat with other users, or download the gorgeous tropical environments the game will take place in as wallpapers. If the art is any indication, Far Cry 3 will look just as stunning as the previous two games when it’s released later next year.Read more at Far Cry
If you are starting to make plans for this year’s summer vacation, you may want to add Dusseldorf, Germany to your list of possible destinations. Where else in the world can you take your family to a theme park built into the remains of a nuclear reactor? Before you start shopping for a personal geiger counter, the theme park named Wunderland Kalkar was built inside a facility that has never been put into operation. Originally called SNR-300, construction delays and resident protests forced a cessation of efforts to bring the plant online. The site sat dormant until Hennie van der Most, a Dutch entrepreneur, purchased it with the idea of making it into an amusement park for families. Right now Wunderland Kalkar has 40 outdoor attractions including a swing ride that puts thrill seekers over the top of the facilities cooling tower. Guests can also enjoy eating at one of the park’s four restaurants or getting some liquid courage from the seven different themed pubs available. There is even a hotel for people wanting to stay overnight to make sure they hit all the rides. Included with the price of admission are all you-can-eat french fries, soft drinks and ice cream. Sounds like a pretty good deal!Currently van der Most is again showing his ingenuity by constructing an indoor theme park designed for use during the cold winter months. This indoor amusement area is being built right into the unused reactor building, which can be seen as either creepy or smart depending on the way you look at it. Looking at Wunderland’s website, the video shown makes it look like any other amusement park we have seen, and a good one at that. It must have something going for it as the park boasts an attendance of over 600,000 guests a year. Read more at Wired

Share your voice The 38 most gut-wrenching Game of Thrones deaths, ranked Comic-Con 2018: Game of Thrones characters reveal season… The final season of Game of Thrones is coming this spring, and with it so might these sneakers.Adidas Ultra Boost line may include six sneakers designed after houses and groups of characters from the show, according to images and detail posted Tuesday by Sneaker News. These will include the Night’s Watch, the White Walkers, House Targaryen, Daenerys’ dragons, House Stark and House Lannister. A representative for Adidas said the images are “unofficial” and that they “cannot confirm any details about the collaboration at this time.”For a show that’s filled with death and brutal murders, the shoes in the leaked images are awfully clean-looking. For instance, the shoes based on the White Walkers are white with a tint of blue and nary a hint of red to go with how bloodthirsty those monsters can be. 38 Photos First published Feb. 5, 2019, 2:03 p.m. PT.Update, Feb. 6 at 9:12 a.m. PT: Adds comment from Adidas. 2:26 Perhaps a sneaker based on a photo actress Maisie Williams put on Instagram last July would be more fitting. In it, the actress says goodbye to her character with white sneakers that are stained with red. While it’s unlikely her character would wear sneakers (combat boots are more her style), she added “#lastwomanstanding” to that post, possibly hinting that she’s one of the final characters to survive in the series. The final season of Game of Thrones is set to premiere on April 14.
