MONTREAL — The Crown outlined its case this morning against a Quebec man who is charged with killing his ailing wife after concluding she did not qualify for a medically assisted death.Michel Cadotte is accused of suffocating his wife, Jocelyne Lizotte, at a Montreal long-term care facility in February 2017.She had been living there for three years with advanced Alzheimer’s. She could no longer speak, take care of herself or recognize relatives.Prosecutor Antonio Parapuf says the 60-year-old woman had been suffering from Alzheimer’s for about a decade, and the evidence will show that Cadotte struggled with his wife’s condition.Cadotte had looked into assisted death for her in 2016. He discovered she did not qualify because she was not able to consent to the procedure and was not considered to be at the end of her life. The eight-man, four-woman jury will begin hearing from police witnesses later today at the Montreal courthouse. The Canadian Press

SSAB has now expanded the range of Hardox wear plate to cover thicknesses from 0.7 mm to 130 mm. This means new opportunities for new and existing customers to develop their products. Where the thickness previously set limits for design solutions, the new extensive Hardox product program opens new doors. Hardox is a wear-resistant steel with very consistent features that make it easy to process. It is not only hard, to resist wear, but also has excellent design characteristics in terms of toughness and formability. In addition, the new thinner version provides even better thickness tolerances and surfaces than classic Hardox.“The production equipment we have invested in makes it possible to give very thin, as well as very thick steel the unique properties of Hardox,” says Johan Broback who is coordinating SSAB´s launch of the new wider product range. He points out that it is the result of a close cooperation with customers as well as an exchange of knowledge between heavy plate production in Oxelösund and sheet manufacturing operations in Borlänge, both in Sweden.“Almost all our customers are striving to create lighter solutions, so the potential for thinner Hardox is virtually limitless,” says Patric Waara who is part of a group of specialists providing daily support to customers in development projects.Truck beds can be made lighter by using thinner sheet with the same lifetime. “The mining industry is an important and expanding market for the thicker grades,” says Claes Löwgren, Business Development at SSAB. “The trend for mining machines is bigger and bigger in order to increase efficiency. Then it is important that there is also Hardox in thicker versions that can keep up with this size development. Right now, we are developing Hardox with thicknesses up to 160 mm together with our customers.”
Stay on target At the southernmost tip of Norway’s coast, Europe’s first “underwater” restaurant has finally opened, except, it’s not your typical dining hub. You can enjoy a drink or a meal — right on the seabed.Dubbed Under, this cool restaurant was designed by Norwegian firm Snøhetta, which wants to give customers a “sunken periscope” experience. The building, which is half-sunken into the sea, is a 34-meter-long (112-foot-long) structure that juts into the water’s surface and rests directly on the seafloor about five meters below the surface. The restaurant has a massive window, which enables 35 to 40 customers to watch marine life from their seats.Photo Credit: Snøhetta“Under is a natural progression of our experimentation with boundaries,” Kjetil Trædal Thorsen, Snøhetta’s founder and architect, said in a press release. “As a new landmark for Southern Norway, Under proposes unexpected combinations of pronouns and prepositions, and challenges what determines a person’s physical placement in their environment.”While diners enjoy the killer seafloor views, they’ll be served locally-sourced produce, including sustainably-caught crab and mussels, paired with different types of beverages. Nicolai Ellitsgaard, a seasoned culinary expert, leads the 16-person kitchen staff that has worked at top Michelin restaurants.Photo Credit: SnøhettaDining isn’t the only main factor for Under: The monolithic building is designed to work with the marine environment over the years, so its concrete shell can become an artificial reef and withstand rugged sea conditions.“The project underscores the delicate ecological balance between land and sea and draws our attention to sustainable models for responsible consumption,” the firm said the press release. “By focusing on the coexistence of life on land and in the sea, Under proposes a new way of understanding our relationship to our surroundings – above the surface, under the water, and alongside the life of the sea.”More on Geek.com:Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg Inspired a BeerThis ‘Venomous’ Hot Sauce Mimics the Burning and Tingling of a Spider BiteStarbucks Will Test ‘Greener,’ Recyclable Cups in Stores Soon PewDiePie Pulls $50,000 Pledge to Anti-Hate Group After Fan BacklashPolice Arrest Dutch YouTubers for Trespassing Area 51 Site
Stay on target Last week, after showcasing of bunch of traditional games in a Nintendo Direct, Nintendo teased us with a first look at something much stranger coming to the Nintendo Switch. We didn’t see gameplay, but we did see a bunch of people all over the world playing with some kind of a weird big hoop thing and a leg strap with Joy-Con attached. We had a lot of questions, but pretty much everyone guessed this was some kind of new exercise game in the vein of the ultra-successful Wii Fit.And pretty much everyone was right. Check out the full introduction to Ring Fit Adventure, an exercise RPG coming to Nintendo Switch next month.First off, that hoop controller finally gets a name. It’s the Ring-Con, following the Joy-Con and the Toy-Con Labo cardboard creations. The leg strap monitors upper body movement while you squeeze the hoop for upper body workouts. You can adjust the resistance level depending on your flex experience. It’s a cool way to get a full body workout with minimal heavy equipment. There’s even a mode for silent leg movements if you don’t want to make too much noise in an apartment. However, this setup means that while the game is technically compatible with the Nintendo Switch Lite, playing using the portable-focused system wouldn’t be idealRing Fit Adventure lets you do simple routines and play quick minigames when you need an exercise in a pinch. But for something more involved and potentially more fun, there’s the actual adventure itself. It looks like a little RPG. Players jog in place to move their character across linear levels and move other parts of their body to perform certain actions. When battling against enemies, you choose from different exercise-based attacks like yoga poses and defensive ab postures. As your character levels up in the game, your body hopefully levels up in real life.Ring Fit Adventure launches October 18 for $80. Meanwhile, here are some more sedentary games to play on your Nintendo Switch right now. ‘Star Wars Pinball’ Has Your Favorite Brand in Ball Form‘Super Smash Bros. Acid drainage from the Tulsequah Chief Mine, northeast of Juneau, discolors a leaking containment pond next to the Tulsequah River in British Columbia in 2013. The U.S. State Department is addressing concerns that other B.C. mines will pollute Alaska rivers. (Photo courtesy Chris Miller/Trout Unlimited)The federal government is taking on the transboundary mining issue.Listen nowThe U.S. State Department now acknowledges Alaskans’ concerns about pollution from British Columbia mines. And it’s committed to engaging Canadian officials to protect salmon-rich, cross-boundary watersheds. In November, the State Department issued a statement saying it was aware of Alaskans’ environmental concerns. And it said it was raising the issue with its Canadian counterparts. But details were scarce. Then, the department sent a letter to Lt. Gov. Byron Mallott, who released it Dec. 28. He’s headed up the administration’s efforts to address potential pollution from mineral prospects across the border in British Columbia.“We’re very excited to see the federal government engaged in this issue and their response that they’ve made to us and to see the actions going forward,” Barbara Blake, the Walker-Mallott administration’s senior transboundary mines adviser, said.Blake said one important promise is to research what the two governments can do to protect Southeast Alaska watersheds.“They’re looking at the gaps and limitations of cooperation between our two countries right now,” Blake said. “And so we’re anxious to see what comes about from their analysis or their review of any gaps or limitations as they currently stand.”The State Department will release its findings at an April meeting of the International Joint Commission, the panel that addresses transboundary water concerns. The department earlier said it would not get involved with the issue. The federal agency’s letter came in response to a November request from the Walker-Mallott administration and Alaska’s congressional delegation to address transboundary mining.Mine critics have repeatedly called for commission involvement. One is Frederick Olsen Jr., who chairs the SouthEast Alaska Indigenous Transboundary Commission. He’s also tribal president of the Organized Village of Kasaan, on Prince of Wales Island.“It looks like it’s a good first step,” Olsen said. “Of course, as it said in the letter, to have the International Joint Commission, you still have to have the Canadians support that.”Heather Hardcastle of Salmon Beyond Borders agrees. She’s encouraged, but said there’s a lot more work to be done.“I think first and foremost we’re looking at some sort of financial-assurances mechanism to be set up so that those of us downstream of these mega-mines know that appropriate bonding has been required of these mining companies,” Hardcastle said. Two mines are operating in transboundary watersheds that flow into Alaska, the Brucejack and the Red Chris. Another, the Tulsequah Chief, is closed and leaking polluted water.Several others are in the exploration phase.Developers and owners have said their operations are or will be safe and won’t damage the environment.Hardcastle said officials also need to press for better technology, including changes in the way waste rock from ore-processing is stored.Mines commonly put them underwater behind earthen dams. Hardcastle said that will lead to spills of polluted water that will harm fish and people downstream. That’s what happened in 2014, when an eastern British Columbia storage dam broke.Observers estimated enough water, mud and rock escaped to fill 2,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools.Olsen said words can’t prevent that from happening closer to home.“Not to be rude, but it’s just a letter. That little piece of paper, if you printed it out, would not stop a lake of poison debacle like Mount Polley or something like that,” Olsen said. The State Department’s letter mentions tribal concerns. But it doesn’t say anything about tribal involvement.Rob Sanderson Jr. is first vice president of the Central Council of Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska.“At the end of the day we are government. The tribes are government,” he said. “So we need to be able to use that leverage moving forward. Not just the state, but the tribes too.”Walker-Mallott mines adviser Blake said officials are looking forward to learning more about the State Department’s plans. But Blake said the administration is not turning the whole issue over to the federal government.“We’re going to continue be engaged with them as necessary and wherever possible. The lieutenant governor would like the state to remain involved in this process,” Blake said.Blake said Mallott will travel to Washington, D.C., for a federal interdepartmental work group led by the Environmental Protection Agency. He’ll also meet with Canadian officials in Ottawa.Mallott’s office also will continue following up on a cooperative agreement Alaska and British Columbia signed last year.
In a surprise move, the Andhra Pradesh government last week had cut excise duty and value added tax (VAT) on low-end liquor, in a bid to mop up more revenues from the category by making it more affordable for daily wage workers and the rural poor..The government has reduced the duty on lower category alcohol brands, also known as cheap liquor, to 15% from 25%. The tax reduction will make Indian made liquor (IML) of 180 ml bottle available for Rs 35-45, which means a savings of Rs 20 per bottle for the consumers, Business Standard reported. The tax cut is expected to boost cheap liquor sales, helping the state to increase its income by 2,000-3,000 crore this year. However, the government raised tax on beer, wine and Indian-made foreign liquor (IMFL) by 5-10%.Meanwhile, the tax cut move on lower category brands attracted severe criticism from various quarters.”Reduction in the price of cheap liquor was aimed at maximising revenue from liquor by making more daily-wagers addicted to the vice,” The Hindu quoted B. Padma, State Secretary, Progressive Organisation of Women, as saying.”The government’s strategy seemed to make cheap liquor affordable to more people on the one hand and hike the tax of other branded liquor consumed by the rich,” said V. Lakshmana Reddy, chairman, Andhra Pradesh Madya Niyanthrana Udyama Committee.Earlier, in May, a report by The Times of India said that the state government was aiming a revenue of Rs.12,727 crore through sale of 30.3 million IML cases and 18.4 million beer cases in the current financial year 2015-16.Andhra Pradesh saw sales of affordable IML rise to 28.9 million cases in 2014-15 compared to 27.5 million cases in the previous fiscal year.

Jane Nelson is the Chair of the Senate Finance Committee.Nelson says they were able to provide more money for Child Protective Services this session. But the plan also reduces state spending for public education funding, requiring local taxing entities to make up the difference. The Senate is also using what’s being labeled as an “accounting trick” to boost its overall budget, which doesn’t sit well with Texas House Speaker Joe Straus.“Counting money twice in order to balance a budget is not a good idea, this is the Texas Legislature, we are not Enron,” Straus says.Members of the Senate Finance Committee unanimously approved using $106 billion of state money to fund its more than $217-billion budget.
